Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

From early reviews it seems that it's got great advances in terms of hand held high res, live ND and improved IBIS. BUT, and I think this is crucial, CAF is pretty much the same as ever unless you're photographing trains, planes or automobiles.

I'm speechless. At the price point it's at, and given its size and build, this camera should be providing state of the art CAF on animals, birds, people etc. It's crazy that it's still doing essentially what the E-M5 did in 2013 when using CAF+Tracking. The new Sony 6400 has now nailed this feature in a body at 1/3 the price.

Then there's the same old EVF, same sensor etc. This release falls a long way short of where it ought to be.

The only positive out of all this IMHO is that hopefully the hand held hi res and live ND find their way into the E-M5iii sometime later this year. That's a camera i might buy, but not this one.

This is a good review (if you can cope with video reviews - personally I prefer something to read):

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

Won’t be getting one but hoping GPS is now back in favour and it’ll appear on 1 mk3 at some point. Really missed moving from a Canon body with it built in to zilch on my Oly bodies. CBA with faffing about using a phone to link in this day and age. I’d buy and external GPS if it sat on the hot shoe and integrated properly.
Lens looking interesting too and nice in white.

Here is LCE's puff piece:

So far I too am in the underwhelmed camp. I'm going to try and get along to one of the sampling days, but without any very high expectations.

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

Robin Wong says...

IMAGE QUALITY

To be entirely honest, after shooting extensively with E-M1 Mark II for the past two years, then seeing what the new E-M1X has produced, the difference in terms of image quality, if there is any, is not worth writing home about. The E-M1X uses the exact same image sensor as the E-M1 Mark II, as well as similar Truepic 8 image processor. Hence, the characteristics of the image output in terms of resolution, color reproduction, dynamic range and high ISO noise control are almost identical for both cameras.

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

The pre-release hype was all about "totally redesigned CAF" - but it seems from the DPReview video that all they've done is add a new subject recognition feature - which is currently limited to trains, planes and automobiles. Once you drop out of that it's the same old. That really is a massive fail IMHO.

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

Most of the reviews still refer to it as a camera for sports and wildlife photography but we now know that it is designed for 'trains, planes and automobiles'. It is all extremely bizarre.

Does it differentiate between steam trains and others?

I bemused. Have Oly lost their collective minds? Presumably the subject recognition ("Deep AI" ) is just software. If so, they really should have further developed it to include animals, birds (yes, I do know they're animals) and people before release. What would another 3-6 months have meant? The whole E-M1x concept was a surprise to us so it's hardly as if 6 months would have made any difference. The 100-400 is a year away too.

The E-M5iii on the other hand....

That will be in the EM1Xii.

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

Looks to me as though the development potential of the 20.3 MP sensor has hit the buffers. All that's left to play with is AI software. They really need to concentrate on the front end instead of adding s/w tricks.
I'll stick with my EM5 Mk1

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

The only thing I'm interested in is the x2 converter. If proves OK I'll probably have one to use with my 40-150 to give me a 300m focal length.
Coupled with the close focus of the 40-150 will be great for close up work.
