![]() ![]() (Above, from the Gallery - by Athena) My gut instinct suggests to me that our long hot summer will deliver a particularly special Autumn foliage display this year. I'm also acutely aware that my efforts to get meets arranged and confirmed has been pretty poor! ![]() So how about it? I propose 2 meets and I will attend and do my best to arrange both; one in the North and one in the South. So I am open to suggestions and advice for locations and dates. Let's start with a general time period; which weeks of the year to come will be in the sweet spot for Autumnal colours? My guess is that the North and South will differ by a week or two at least. Can I suggest we settle on agreed answers by the end of next week? Once that is decided we can think about more precise dates and actual venues. I would like to have dates and locations decided by the middle of September ![]() Over to you! Ian

Re: Autumn colours
The classic place for autumn colours in the south is westonbirt arboretum.
They have the national Acer collection there Normally we would go just before the clocks change, but this year a week or too earlier could be appropriate as my Acers are showing a few signs already because they got stressed Regards Andy

Re: Autumn colours
Thanks Andy, conveniently close to you
![]() ![]() ![]() But, seriously, a strong candidate for the South. I'm going to look at my archive of autumn shots to try to gauge the date ranges. Ian

Re: Autumn colours
Unsure of the best week, as Andy says there are signs of Autumnal leaves as the hot summer has done odd things to botanical beings.
Either way, I am up for it. Live in Carmarthenshire, with good access to motorways etc. Look forward to it... .. ![]() Edit: And the meeting too... ... ![]() |

Re: Autumn colours
I have to admit that in general I am usually disappointed that our native forests don't produce the colours I have seen when visiting other countries - especially parts of the USA. This may simply be to the types of trees that proliferate here, but I'm sure the climate also counts. The arboretum does have a wide variety of trees that traditionally produce great Autumn colours, so that looks like a safe bet. But it would be nice to find an area of more indigenous flora to photograph as well.

Re: Autumn colours
This might be of some interest?
![]() There is one other location - Northumberland - that could be of interest but it is a National Trust property? Cragside House and Gardens. The First House in the world to be powered by hydro-electricity. ![]()

Re: Autumn colours
One, albeit minor problem with National Trust sites, is that they don't allow drone use. I'd definitely like to take some aerial shots with mine if at all possible, but it's not a high priority.
