I would have thought as in most photo contests, it's for the entrant to make his or her own interpretation of the "theme". That's what makes it interesting.

Are you going to submit an entry ?

Re: August Photo Challenge - Life's a Beach

Sorry if the title is causing confusion. To clarify, this is a wide brief and could range from a packed beach full of people to a deserted landscape/seascape, with plenty of scope for creative thinking!

The brief says " subjects can be anything connected to the sea or coastline".

"Life's a beach" is actually the antithesis of the expression "Life's a bitch". As it's August and holiday season when many go to the coast John has used it as a snappy title for the challenge it doesn't have to be taken literally. Ingenious interpretation of the title can make all the difference in a challenge like this IMHO.

Re: August Photo Challenge - Life's a Beach

I like wide subjects, and although I submitted a shot full of people it would be a great pity if the competition was narrowed down by post hoc rules that people (or anything else) are essential subjects
I think that the judges votes alone should determine what fits the theme

Re: August Photo Challenge - Life's a Beach

During my brief foray into photo club life, I submitted an abstract print (an attempt to make an alien landscape from a portion of a nude body) in which I used an image of the earth from space as a small element. It was disqualified because I hadn't taken the shot of the earth myself!
