Re: Fens Falconry BIF meeting?

Andy told me that a group of ten or a bit more would be ideal.

The first Fens Falconry meet im 2014 was free because they were just setting up and I suppose we were regarded as a rehearsal for paying members of the public. This time there is a fee per person and I'm just waiting for confirmation of that.

Re: Fens Falconry BIF meeting?

I would like to attend if the dates work out. No holidays booked but we're in the throes of moving our daughter to new accommodation as she is starting a new job

Cheers,

I'd be interested in going, if you don't mind a beginner who'll probably ask loads of stupid questions.

I appreciate that there are some pretty awful people out there, but Fens Falconry are run to a high ethical standard. I've known Mike (the owner) for many years. He's a young guy and is keen to get rid of old practices and habits (some of which are down right illegal/cruel/unethical or all three).

His birds, unlike many places, are exercised every day and given high quality food (not the dreadful endless diet of one-day old chicks). They also have plenty of rest periods in the year to moult and have down-time from shows. The primary decider is always the health and wellbeing of the bird.

Mike involves himself in education with schools and conservation groups to educate people about the wildlife around them, how to study their behaviour and appreciate the natural environment without disturbance. He also takes in injured birds and works with a very specialised vet (who does wonders) to rehabilitate them, when appropriate.

I hope you will give falconers as a group another chance; I am as disgusted as you with some of the evil that goes on, but am glad that this is not the mainstream of falconers.

Regards

Andy

Re: Fens Falconry BIF meeting?

I'm not totally sure on the price right now. What I can say is it'll be after 8th September (I'm in the US visiting the wife's folks).

I'm up for a split group too, doing 2 days if there's enough numbers.

I have just got the mk2 myself and I hope to fully versed in its foibles by then!

Re: Fens Falconry BIF meeting?

Aside... I must apologise for being incommunicado for quite a number of months. I'm not dead, just resting (but neither blue nor Norwegian).

I've had a health downturn compounded by a family court matter (which, I am glad to say ended well) and my daughter having a serious illness too. I'm trying to ramp up my photography again (and, not least, my general enthusiasm) so I hope to be a more visible presence here.

Re: Fens Falconry BIF meeting?

Andy, sounds like life has been pretty rough recently glad to see you are now able to get back into photography. Feel free to post some shots to whet our appetite for a Fens visit.

Re: Fens Falconry BIF meeting?

I would be interested depending on timing. It's a 2 1/2 hour drive so will have to think about it.

Re: Fens Falconry BIF meeting?

Cost is confirmed at 75 per person and we need at least 10 attendees.

I think Andy is on holiday as he has just posted a shot of a hummingbird on Facebook

He says he is consulting Fens Falconry on possible dates.

Re: Fens Falconry BIF meeting?

Yep, no hummingbirds in East Anglia... I'm back in Blighty in the first week of September. I'll ping Mike again for dates.

Intertubes not very fast in rural Michigan, so piccies may be a little sparse.
