Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

Must admit, as a relative newby to this forum, I found the 'forum index' tab very helpful in finding the relevant place for my posts. Not a suggestion, I know, but just an observation from someone new'ish.

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

Ian, this is a refreshing discussion because now I see that contributors who have been around far longer than me, also experience similar niggles. Now for G sake don't even think this is a comment personally directed at you. But it still surprises me how many members/guests there are who don't end up being Posters: How newbies like myself get confused what to do. I PM'd some time ago that I would be more than happy to support some sort of (low) Subscription Fee for access to this wonderful world. By doing so maybe some of the questions raised here could be addressed?

If anyone hasn't yet noticed, there is now a new 'general photography' board at:

Without being picky & pedantic, but I thought the Lounge was not for photography (like tourist type photos)?

I don't mind photos in the Lounge but if there is a more appropriate place then a thread risks being moved there.

It's just common sense really

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

In the days that I went to Hayling Island Camera Club, I used to submit images into the comps and listen to the talks with great interest.

After the meeting a good quantity of attendees would decamp to the Rose In June Pub (I think) there the discussion was a very good mirror of the Lounge in this Forum of late, a bit of politics, where have you been, what bit of kit have you acquired, how do you do certain things either in the darkroom or with a camera or with a studio etc etc etc. There would be discussions involving all the people or several 2 or 3 handed discussions going on.

At no point would we have considered the need for a person to hold up a banner and say I want to talk about Cibachrome printing or studio lighting we would just allow the conversation to meander, sometimes you got a good tip on a photo topic, the next minute on a good pointer to bargain at the local shops (this being before the days of the internet and Amazon).

Eventually it was the publican that called time, not the chairman of the camera club.

The pub session was the most valuable part of the evening. One of the benefits for me was getting a flight in a private plane flying over the assembled ships for the fleet review in 1977 with one of the members who had a PPL.

So rename the Lounge to the Pub and let it continue.

The lounge (in a pub) is a more refined area than the rougher, beer swilling bar in a pub, so what are you suggesting?

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

The term pub can include the garden, the public bar as well as the lounge.

Not all pubs are riotous areas of assembly.

In a lounge one is more likely to be sitting in a specific group of people, in a pub/bar one can migrate between different groups and individuals.

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

When I first joined, I sort of foresaw this 'problem'. Based on experience from the Pentax site, I suggested that a Sticky be created titled 'Just Another Pointless Thread'.
It had been going on for years and had the effect of sucking in all the non-photographic chatter we like to indulge in. So instead of having a humongous number of individual titles e.g. Should TM/Ryan Air/Microsoft/Mc Fluffies, be banned from the universe, it made a clear distinction between chat and photo stuff.

I also would agree that there are far too many sub-group Threads. Why not reduce them and have top line categories which then have sub-groups within those.

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

As a case in point, I posted a question in one of the darker corners of the forum yesterday, asking about the type of film that a regular member used. More than 24 hours later there have been no replies from anyone.

Had I posted the same question in the Lounge I daresay I would have received at least one reply before the thread was moved to a more appropriate place.

I accept this doesn't justify posting anything and everything in the Lounge, but it does help to explain why people do, especially newbies, and even more especially those who need a quick answer to a pressing photographic problem.

As your post was aimed specifically at a particular member it's hardly surprising nobody else responded.

So whether your post was in the "darker corners" or the Lounge, I suspect the result would be the same.

I rest my case

John
Yes that is a fair point, and I fully accept the question was aimed at a specific member.

But I would still maintain that had the same question been asked in the same way in the Lounge there would have been at least one reply, even if from somebody else, and not answering the specific question.

My point is that to many people, especially newbies, the darker corners of this forum seem a bit like a black hole, so why would you post a burning question in them?

Does anyone "really" care if "photography topics" get posted there ?

What is really needed is two lounges, or a split one, one for photography subjects (there is currently no clear place for non-hardware/non-software photgraphy subjects) and one for other subjects.

However, how can anyone be upset by the current mix? There is no obligation to read topics of no personal appeal.

Harold
