Places to Photo in North Yorkshire

Hi all,

Just booked a short break, with the family, in Pickering with the intention of visiting places such as Goathland, Beckhole, Robin Hoods Bay etc., but wondered if anyone had any other good spots in that area which may be worth a visit for its photographic appeal.

We're not 'hardened walkers' but are looking forward to a bit of fresh air and great scenery.

Many thanks in advance.

Graydon

Re: Places to Photo in North Yorkshire

I've never been so not much help there I'm afraid..But on the evidence of some of the great photos that have been posted on the forum from that area I'm sure you won't need to go far to find some really sweet spots.
Have a great time.

Saltburn, just up the coast, is also worth visiting for its funicular railway.

Thanks Stephen you have managed to capture some great shots from the area.

Gavin, the link seems to be down/slow at the moment but I will check back.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Ripon, Fountains abbey, Knarsbourough, Whitby. There's a pile of stones up there too but I cannot remember the name of the place. May be too far away for you.

Brimham Rocks!!

Re: Places to Photo in North Yorkshire

Nothing to do with photography, a far more important topic,

The Blacksmiths Arms at Lastingham used to be worth a visit for an evening meal, and The New Inn at Cropton brews it's own rather fine beers and serves reasonable food.

I've not been in either for a year or more, so it's possible standards have slipped, please let us know, but don't blame me for the hangovers.

Also as you head North East out of Cropton, keep your eyes open on the right for a little plastic greenhouse, on the pavement just before the end of the village, for a supply of superb home made jams.

Re: Places to Photo in North Yorkshire

Knaresborough is well worth a look. The river valley and castle ruins are very picturesque and they had some rather fun public art when we were there recently.

Harlow Carr gardens just outside Harrogate are also worth a visit.

I haven't been there for some years, but Helmsley (12th century castle ruins & market square - Black Swan Hotel used to be good) and the surrounding area used to be very pretty. Rievaulx Abbey and the terrace gardens nearby are fantastic.

Rosedale Abbey to test your nerve on a steep road...

Re: Places to Photo in North Yorkshire

Hi, You have a formidable list there, many will be too far to be worthwhile going. If you are in Goathland, Go to tthe railway station, cross to the far platform and go out through the gate climbing the hillside for about 60 yds and follow the railway side to your left, you will than start to go downhill go halfway down and find a vantage point and wait for the steam train. This looks down on Darnholme Beck, they are going up a very steep gradient and will be working hard.
Hugh, Love your shot of Staithes, I am staying there next week for a week so maybe there weather will be kind.

Re: Places to Photo in North Yorkshire

Ah yes, Ryedale Folk Museum...

A great place for photography. I'd had my E-500 for less than a week when I was there and I was sharing it with my daughters. The elder one had set it to manual focus and I didn't notice so nearly all of my efforts are blurry...
