Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens.

I bought a Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens recently to use on my E-P5.

Initial impression is that it's mechanically well made and handles nicely. What I find really remarkable is the 'light gathering power' of the f1.4. It will pick out detail in poor lighting totally invisible to the naked eye, though it won't necessarily render a sharp photograph at f1.4. (The usefulness of a wide aperture is something I might have 'poo-pooed' in the past, but I think I might be converted now!)

I haven't extensively tested it, but my impression is that it is soft at f1.4, but sharpens up acceptably at f2.0. Out of focus regions are unobtrusive (I refuse to use the 'b' word - it didn't exist when I started photography!).

Here's an image I took of some 'sorbus' fruit at ISO 400, f2.0 and 1/640 sec.. The DOF is just sufficient to render two foremost fruit acceptably sharp.

I have this lens too. I find it pretty sharp at f1.4, but of course the DOF is very narrow so it's easy to miss focus.

That's interesting Paul, do you have any examples?

I took one look at a couple of f1.4 images, saw that they were soft, and assumed that it was to be expected. Maybe I need to try again.

Here's an old one. ISO 6400 but shot at f1.4.

Thanks Paul, the magnified image on flikr looks pretty good and something for me to aim for.

I'm sure the lens will do better Jim. That shot was at ISO 6400 and a shutter speed of 1/45s with a subject that was moving. I'll take a few shots under more controlled situations which should be more representative.

Jim - quick shot of some stock cubes! f1.4 on the Pen-F. Focus point is on "DROP US A LINE":

My view - very sharp, even wide open. LOCA plain to see (purple in front, green behind).

Re: Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens.

As an inveterate berry and fruit snapper my thoughts are that smooth, shiny fruits are not the best subject for a focus test. I am disappointed with so many shots every year because of the apparent lack of focus (with all sorts of lenses). And these are lenses which do very well with sharp detail.

Often the focus grabs a highlight on the surface bloom which is not ideal, but the smooth surface texture is a key factor, I think. Plus the roundness and depth means a very small proportion will be in sharp focus wherever you select. And with a bunch of fruits it is quite challenging to select your critical focus to be all you need. So looking later my eyes go to all of the OOF stuff and am disappointed.

That may all be blindingly obvious but I still do it and have far too many '...nah' shots. And I still do it every year. Red berries and sharp light draw me in.

So I'd try a few hairy or textured fruits or other subjects before being too disappointed it looks a good lens. Perhaps that is why people shoot cats??
