RIAT + 40-150 pr on EM-5 mk2 = Joy

I spent a wonderful day at RIAT on Sunday (despite a 1.5 hour jam meaning we didn't arrive until 11.30 )

My first chance to really give the new system (and myself) a work out and overall the outcome was a real delight, physically for me as after 6 hours of continuous hand-holding I feel great today and also for the system.

A bit of work to do on my over-head hand-holding technique (I was waving the camera about like a feather duster at times! ) but also I was getting some focus lock problems + "ghosting" under some conditions.

The first appeared to be related to the fact that whilst fiddling with the button setting the day before I had set the LN button to 2X digi TC, once I cleared this setting focus lock become consistently accurate again (I had spotted that at some point I activated digi TC which appeared to mess focus up with the 1.4 X TC attached)

the ghosting was, I think, possibly caused by the protection filter I was using against all the soot and kerosene vapours mixed with runway dust blowing about)

I've started a flikr gallery of pics here:

but won't bore you with all the images I post there, just a few of my favourites from the first bit of processing done so far

all pics cropped and then downsized to 1500 pix for posting

I guess you had to be there, they were playing at being the Red Arrow duo doing cross-overs, it was amazing to watch how they timed their turns and adjusted flight angles to keep speed similar

Nice Brian.

Seems that being closer to and facing the flight line did bring you some excellent shots.

I'd be well chuffed with them

one benefit of arriving late and by coach was that the coach park was right at the down wind end of the runway. There was a small clear area of grass just off the taxi way which was practically empty so my buddy and I just set up our base there, pure chance but it worked

Love it when a plan comes together.

I missed two excellent shots, one of the Typhoon and Spitfire and one of the Mig because I had ditched the 12-40mm and just stuck with the 40-150mm. They were somewhat low

The Vulcan and the Red Arrows is the cream of the crop for me.

Great pics : my fave is the head-on collision one. *gulp*
They really are clever now that they got them flying backwards.

Re: RIAT + 40-150 pr on EM-5 mk2 = Joy

an example of just how frustrated I got sat in the jam and how the 40-150 cheered me up, a couple of shots from across the coach of the Airbus 400 strutting its stuff (shame I missed the display as I wanted to see it )

airbus 400 from my bus by Brian Wadie Photographer, on Flickr

mind you, I'm not suggesting they are "great shots" just that I was pleased it even managed to get a focus lock it was so grey and horrible
