Thumbs up C-AF improved since Version 2 Firmware?

There were some messages on here about a possible improvement in C-AF since the version 2 firmware has appeared, but I can't find the thread now, so I'm starting this one. Last Sunday I decided to experiment at Shuttleworth and used C-AF most of the time with the 9 centre AF points and it did seem to be much better than before, but still not perfect using the 75-300mm lens.

The page at this link, http://www.bengeo.com/caf/caf.html, shows 13 photos taken in 5 seconds of the Hawker Hunter jet approaching at speed. They are 100% crops with no processing at all. The first images are quite distant, but they get big as it gets close - so you will have to scroll horizontally for the lower photos. Not great photos, but I think they show the C-AF has improved. Warning - page is about 15Mb.

I'd be interested to hear if others have found the same improvement.

Andy

Dunno, I have to admit I gave up on CAF with OMD some time ago, happy with SAF now - does what I want.

Re: C-AF improved since Version 2 Firmware?

I have had some major issues with C-AF on E-M1, so much so that I was using the E-5 more. Since V.2 software update I have done one rally in the North Yorkshire forests. I have the best results from the camera this year, using C-AF sign point focusing and low continuous shooting. It seem to be an improvement but I would like to a couple more events before I'm convinced.

Re: C-AF improved since Version 2 Firmware?

I have been using E-M1 with the Panny 100-300 for BIF and even with V2 firmware I have found C-AF very hit and miss, so much so that I have bought a used Canon 100-400 L lens and 7D body. I am still using the E-M1 and lenses for other photography and am hoping that the forthcoming f4 300mm prime will be as good as the Canon L in both focusing and IQ departments. The 1.4 TC will be very useful also.

I am sure the forthcoming F4 300mm prime will have superb IQ on a par with the Canon L and very fast S-AF but I think we will have to wait for the E-M1 replacement (at least) before C-AF is anything like good enough. In other words the body is the problem.

Whilst I'm useless at BIF shots, I've seen some excellent examples taken with E-M1's and various lenses.

From my perspective, the body is fine however, the operator is the weak link.

I am not denying that good BIF images cannot be taken with Mu4/3 bodies and lenses, the two images below were taken with E-M1 and Panasonic 100-300 but they were fairly easy images to take under ideal conditions. It is when the conditions are tougher that the equipment starts to fail, particularly C-AF.

Well I wanted to show 2 images but all I am able to do is 2 thumbnails from my gallery page. I am useless at posting on forums. How do you post images in forum threads?

This one's not too bad! E-M1 and 50-200 SWD.

Re: C-AF improved since Version 2 Firmware?

I have never used CAF for my BIF work (or other flight work) so haven't yet had a play with CAF in V2 firmware

Now I am getting used to my 50-200SWD I may have a ago with it but I can't see it making a lot of difference to my keeper rate

I still find my technique of repeated half-press blipping of the shutter button lets me track even fast moving small birds like a Peregrine until I fire off a short high speed sequence to capture the moment I want
