Cool New 'Like' button

A lot of you use the 'Thanks' button to show your appreciation when you come across a really handy or useful post but for some time now I have been aiming to add a 'Like' button as well. There is already a Facebook like button so that you can share a post with your Facebook friends (which could well bring more members onboard of course) but the new 'Like' button can be used at the same time in conjunction with this and the 'Thanks' button.

The new Like button works almost exactly the same way as the Thanks button and the code was written by the same programmer. In fact under the skin it's a 'Groan' (dislike) alternative to 'Thanks' but I think that would just cause problems!

So I have reconfigured it to work as a 'Like' button. The likes you have given will be recorded and shown as well as the number of times others have liked something you have posted!

I hope this will further improve the experience and usefulness of using this forum

Have done some testing but of course if happen to notice anything odd - please let me know so that I can fix it!

Ian

Re: New 'Like' button

Ian. You omitted to say what it is for???
Your post said what it is not. And what the 'thanks' and facebook buttons are for. And that 'like' is recorded. And that we can use it in combination with other buttons. But what should we use it for? Or does this site have a user manual? I guess you were over excited about it. But this is something new. I don't understand.

There are so many things that one should avoid "Liking" about themselves; laughing at your own jokes, etc...

Your comment appealed to my more "base" humour (just for a moment)

Whatever leads you to that conclusion?

Re: New 'Like' button

This will devalue our already-received "Thanks", rendering them meaningless beneath the coming deluge of "Likes" ... which are totally, totally different from "Facebook Likes" which are really "Facebook" pointers. Boycott the new "Like", stand firm on our beloved "Thanks".

(I enjoyed the little time we had on DPReview when the up and DOWN thumbs existed. -evil laugh- )

Wow this simple little word can open a whole new can of worms.

Not only does it have multiple uses in "plain English" (noun, verb, adverb, adjective, preposition, particle, conjunction, hedge, filler and quotative ) in "social media" it can have romantic connotations.

"Wikipedia"
"The word can also be redoubled (often in a more juvenile sense) to indicate a more romantic interest, often with increased stress on the first 'like.' The functional basis for this repetition is a heavy emphasis on the root meaning of 'like,' which is 'to favor.'

I know you like Samantha, but do you like like her?"

So.... if you accidentally like someone's post twice you could be "like" misunderstood.

I recently discovered that if you really like like someone on Facebook you can poke them.

Cheers,

Ralph.

Re: New 'Like' button

So lets see where would you use the like button, well I guess Foto Fair would be a good contender.

Lets take Annies Post Thames Walk as a example 400 views and 23 replies.

Does this mean 23 people liked the images and 377 did not!

Or does it mean 23 people like them and most of the rest did but did not have the time/could not be bothered (take your pick) to write a post.

I'd put my money on the second and now even the short of time folk can now show there liking for a good image by clicking the like button which will not take any of there valuable time.

Yes, in this situation "Like" is more appropriate than "Thanks" and hopefully will get more use.

Hi there Paul!

The only issue I could see with this is the posibility that because there is an easy way to show appreciation, people may take this short cut, rather than taking a little extra time to write a post and say what part of an image or what aspect of an image they like. When I have posted images, even in foto fair, this feedback has been invaluable to let me know what has worked in the images I have posted.

Also, if people don't take to the like button then it may be a little disheartening if there have been 400 views but only 23 likes!

Cheers,

Ralph.
