Coming to terms using flckr - Advice appreciated.

I've finally succumbed to making use of flicker after having opened an account with it 4 years ago & doing nothing with. I've started an album on it titled The Three Sisters, Blue Mountains, besides a few other photos I had uploaded.

I'd appreciate it if other more experienced flickr users could take a look & give me some advice with settings etc. & any other useful hints on using it.

Thanks,

So far so good, Ross - looks very good for a first attempt!

My own Flickr space is out of date and a bit of a mess really.

Re: Coming to terms using flckr - Advice appreciated.

Hi Ross, here's my 2p worth.
You've uploaded what look like full size originals.
You've also allowed downloading of those images.

I upload at 1080 pixels height (landscape or portrait) as 1920x1080 is a very common display size. There are higher resolution displays but 'Full HD' is a sweet spot. That means photos upload relatively quickly and should display well to most people - Flickr will downscale the images for smaller screens.
If (when) they are nicked then there are practical limits to how much use they are for print etc.

You can alter the downloading rights for your images here
https://www.flickr.com/account/privacy

-
Other suggestions...
Titling your images would be nice - not every one does but I do.
Just click on the text and updates it e.g. "K6125600[CaOne]adj-cr"
You can also add a description if you want.

If you want people to find your images then adding the location will help.
Click on the map in the bottom right if you don't already have Geotags on the images.

Add tags for the content will help you to show up in searches.
I add tags in a batch when I upload - various ones for OM-D, Olympus, M4/3 etc. And then subject specific e.g. London, Thames, Nightlife etc.
Use spaces to separate tags and "double quotes" to group two or more words together.

Joining groups and adding your photos will also attract visitors to see them and expose you to other work.
There are various subject specific ones and ones around manufacturers and specific lenses etc.
e.g. https://www.flickr.com/groups/om-d_user/

Photos can be added to multiple Albums in your account, so I have albums for each of the camera bodies and lenses I use and I add my pictures to them when I upload.

I've "followed" you which means I will see your new images pop up when I log in, if you follow people they may well follow you back which means you'll see interesting photos

Hi Ross

The images look fine - no problems there!

You may want to reduce the size of your uploads and/or restrict the ability to download images.

I change the titles of the images from the name of the jpg file and alter the descriptions to something meaningful (or leave them blank).

Flickr generates tags automatically from the images but you can add your own which helps people find them.

This YouTube video is quite helpful (video quality is rather poor): https://youtu.be/z-kWrjSwZZg

Thanks for all that useful information. At this point I've now changed the download to me until I decide what else to have in the settings.
I've also created the desired web address (locked in & can't change now!).

Re: Coming to terms using flckr - Advice appreciated.

Ross, I don't know how you're uploading your photos, but I use a program on Windows called flickr uploadr Version 3.2.1, available from various sources including tucows
It's the old 2009 version and quite intuitive; allows loading, tagging and captioning of multiple images at the same time. I know it claims up to Vista only, but works on all versions I've tried after that as well.

It also allows photos to be added to multiple albums as part of the upload process.
Say you've 20 photos to upload, 10 of which all need the same title, just select the relevant photos in the left hand pane with Control/left-click and caption/tag them all at the same time.

More importantly for me, it's all done external to the website/browser, though when everything's uploaded, it links you there to confirm each set of uploads.

Re: Coming to terms using flckr - Advice appreciated.

It works well...………

Agree with AMc about image size. I keep to "Medium" which keeps the file size 500kb or below. I find it informative to place the photo on the "Map". And of course add keywords.

But whatever you do, don't do a search for Tits, Blue or Great, it can damage your health...…………….

Re: Coming to terms using flckr - Advice appreciated.

Thanks for all the help so far & also for following me, but please don't be offended if I don't start following you all (yet) as I want to take a step at a time. Initially I wanted a place to have my photos that could be shared on various forums & hadn't really thought about the whole community thing on flickr, so I'll get into it more as I feel comfortable.

I had created downsized images (1500 x 2000 pixels) at what I thought might have been maximum for FB of a red wattle bird so that is now uploaded & in the Birds - anything with feathers album.

Here's one of them.

K7116802[CaOne]adj-cr-ms by Ross, on Flickr
(when I add ms to files = medium small)

I'll have to think about creatively renaming images before uploading too (or at least before sharing).

Re: Coming to terms using flckr - Advice appreciated.

Your site looks great to me Ross. Maybe it's because you loaded the images at full res but they do look super sharp, definitely better than mine come out so may be I ought to rethink what I do. I tend to use 1200px and 1000kb as max sizes or sometimes 960px and 500kb, the latter is the same as I use to load on here.

No need to rename before you upload - I either do it as I'm uploading in the browser - which happens in parallel with the image upload or in the image page on Flickr after the fact.

If I rename images I have there now that others have already added them as faves, does that mean they would lose the link? I've done a few, so does that break any links or not?

Don't think so the only thing I know breaks sharing links is if you use the "pen on paper" icon to replace the image entirely or delete it.
I've done that once or twice when I've uploaded the full size not the scaled down copy.

Great picture Ross. I like the way you have captured the bird and the tree; and I like that you have shared it with us on the forum as I have no FB account.

Thanks, but that is on Flickr & you should be able to see all the photos I’ve uploaded so far by clicking on the link in my signature as well as on the image. Please let me know if it doesn’t work.
