Serial Number Change?

This may have been asked before, but my EM1 Mk1 has recently returned from a brief stay in Portugal courtesy Olympus Service, after a strap lug fell off. It returned with a note saying the serial number had been changed, so keep the document with the original details / proof of purchase. Is it usual for serial numbers to be changed during a service?

The reason might be that the serial number tag on the underside was missing, and a new one has been fitted, but it seems odd. The old and new numbers both tie in with the number shown on the 'hidden' data when reading shutter count.

Excellent service by Olympus, by the way - as everyone else seems to have experienced.

Never heard of that before Martin, interesting hope someone can explain it does sound a bit odd unless they changed the whole chassis of the camera.

I would think this is almost certainly the case. Does the shutter count before/after the service tie up?

Re: Serial Number Change?

Sometimes there is a serial number change after repair work by Olympus. I assumed it was because substantial work needed to be done.

Re: Serial Number Change?

Thanks for the comments; the shutter count had gone up by three, which suggests that it is the same body, unless there's a bit of witchcraft going on. There are a few little marks on the body - but I can't be definite that they are the same little marks that were there originally.

However, after using the camera in the last day or so, I'm less happy, as it now seems to continuously turn itself on and off - so a bit more monitoring to be done, I think.

That strap lug failure is not uncommon on the E-M1 and, I believe, early E-M5s as well. It almost lost me both my camera and 100-400mm lens while I was on holiday in New Zealand, so I'd advise everyone to check regularly for any sign of looseness.

When my somewhat 'well-used' E-M1 was returned from a repair in Portugal, my initial impression was that it was a new body - it looked so pristine. The serial number had not been changed but the cosmetic appearance certainly had.

No, Sadly it was too good to be intentional.
