Zuiko 50-200 recommendation

Folks - anyone wanting a bit more magnification than the 40-150, or less expenditure, I can recommend the 50-200swd f2.8 to f3.5 with the MMF-3 adaptor. It seems pretty quick to focus to me, IQ is great and it supports pro-capture. Examples on my Flikr page. The birds & butterflies are all taken with this lens.

I too would recommend the 50-200. I bought my one second hand, owned it for just over two years and sold it for only 30 less than I paid for it...

Don't forget you can also put x1.4 and 2x converters on as well. Regretted parting with mine when I went micro.

Re: Zuiko 50-200 recommendation

Also be a aware that the non-SWD version is also quite nice, usually even less expensive, and no longer repairable by Olympus (at least in the US). But at the right price, one could treat it as disposable.

I had mine for a couple of years until it literally fell apart in my hands. While Olympus wouldn’t repair it, they did give me a nice coupon towards the purchase of a new 40-150/2.8.

Yes, great lens for IQ (though not as compact or lightweight as some). I love mine.

(Little surprised to read that it supports pro capture as I think that's a new feature on E-M1 Mark II which I don't have. I'd imagine a new feature would either work with all lenses or with only new ones ...)

Re: Zuiko 50-200 recommendation

Am I right in thinking these 4/3 lenses need the E-M1's Phase Detection AF sensors rather than the Contrast Detection sensors used in my PEN-F? If so, although you have certainly made me look at these 4/3 lenses with renewed interest, I'm not too keen on buying a lens that won't have the same autofocusing capabilities on both my Olympus cameras

I think you are right, Chris, although others who have used them with those bodies will be able to give better feedback. Depending on your subject and shooting style it might not be a problem in practice, but if you are doing action stuff I suspect it would be.

Re: Zuiko 50-200 recommendation

Considering the Price and weight, why not have a look at the Panasonic Lumix 100-300? The Mk1 which is not weather sealed is affordable off the used market and there is one on sale here in the forum. (not certain if it's still available and if it's mk1 or mk2)
