Advice please

I have been asked to take a group photo for a nursery school, aged 5 years. 16 children I believe in a group.
I have photographed large groups before, 144 members of the RE HQ Sgts Mess for example, but never a formal group of five year olds. The staff assure me that they are well behaved children, lets hope so.
I am praying for fine weather so I could do the job outside but in the event of rain, I will have to do it inside.
I have 2 Elinchrom flashes, 1 with 24" Pro reflector and other with 20".
Any advice re positioning of the lights would be appreciated.

Re: Advice please

I can't give you any help on lights but positioning kids so they are all looking at the camera may be a real challenge. Don't think I've ever managed to get a shot of all four of my Grandchildren with lovely smiling faces looking at meat the same time!

Re: Advice please

Dave,

Tricky, is it indoor's or outdoors.

You have a large group and two lights may not be enough, but depend's on what kind of set / final image you are after.

My youngest recently had a school classroom shot, and it was shot with say 5 groups of 3 kids each well lit and the final composition was presented as a landscape group portrait finalised in ps.etc.

ie: take 5 images of approx 3 children and then combine them all into one wide shot.

This will allow your elinchrom sufficient to light them, and should work indoor's or outdoor's.

Hope this helps

Re: Advice please

I concurr with all the advice offered BUT would say in or out and large or small groups - GET their attention !

Ask their Teacher to get them playing a NEW GAME hands by side, heads down looking at their feet and on one, claps hands - two heads up and - on three shout CHEESEY Fish fingers ...

at least getting their attention you have all their FACS looking towards the Teacher (who should be beside you )

My wife does this everyday for her company

The small groups are done inside in studio with white background and then patched together i think they call it Vista

Otherwise she does Classroom / Group outdoors without extra lighting any corrections are done on the pc

Can you ask your wife how she positions the lights?
I do have enough power in the lights if I have to shoot indoors and hopefully the rain will hold off so I can shoot outside.

Re: Advice please

I did this once to help a friend but all parents had not given permission to the school under its Child Protection Policy and some shots had to be taken again without those children in the shots. May not apply just thought it worth a mention, PC gone mad but!

Yes you are correct, child protection gone mad.
I will leave it up to the nursery management to have sorted that out.

Thanks for this.
If I have to shoot indoors, I will use a plain blue curtain that is in situ for the background, so cannot shoot through it. I will probably sit a couple of staff down before the shoot and try the lights at 45 deg but different powers so as to give some modelling.

You have the lights so just spend some time with the teachers until you get your setting correct

i am sure you will be fine with a bit of practice time spent
