Red Kite - soaring high in the sun!

The weather in the UK has been wonderful now for a few weeks and we have spent much time out and about making the most of it.

This red kite seemed to be enjoying the day as much as we were -

Taken with E-M1 II, 40-150mm with MC-14.

Regards,
Ann1e

This has to be among your best red kite bif yet, Anne, clinically sharp.
I'm finding the 40-150mm just great for birding, hope to share some come spring.
As good as the M5 is, I'm sorry I didn't go the extra mile for the M1 Mkii

Thank you Phill -

I have been attempting red kite shots for some time now - far more failures than successes I'm afraid but there are two 'musts' to show them at their best - a clear blue sky behind them and the sunlight shining directly on to their feathers.

We were out today but although the weather was mostly good, every time we saw a red kite it flew in front of a cloud and for most of the time the sun was definitely not where we wanted it to be!

Regards,
Ann1e

Thank you!

We have been very fortunate with our weather for several weeks now - really clear skies - but red kite soar high and very quickly and as I mentioned to Phill, they are not the best for posing!

Ann1e

Thank you for your critique, Mark!

The 40-150mm is really good for birding, especially with the converter taking it to 210mm. I am finding the old knees and hips playing up a bit nowadays and the weigh is manageable. It helps that often our birding pix are taken in locations we need to drive to, so I am not lugging equipment miles. If we are walking locally and taking landscapes/closer nature shots, then I also love my even lighter 12-100mm!

Regards,
Ann1e

Re: Red Kite - soaring high in the sun!

Anne, I sympathise with your hip and knee issues as I have my own!
I suspect that you may have the 40-150mm F2.8 Pro; mine is the F4-5.6,
I now regret not going the extra stretch for the M1 Mkii and the pro for birding.

Hello again Mark -

Quite right - mine is the F2.8 Pro and it is a superb lens for the job! The combination with the M1 Mkii is superb, although for some reason they are not quite as responsive now as they were - not sure if an update along the way affected the immediate focus I was getting?

Regards,
Ann1e

Re: Red Kite - soaring high in the sun!

Interesting comment Ann1e I don't use my 40-150 all that much but when I do it's great as you said. I've been trying it with extension tubes recently for macros and although it works pretty well the dof is a bit too thin to make it easy to do. I hadn't noticed any changes in focus ability though, what version of the firmware are you running on the camera and lens?

Many thanks for coming back on the 40-150, Phill - the version of firmware I am running on the camera/lens is 2.1/1.2.

Kind regards,
Ann1e
