Before that post I mentioned we had 39 donors, since then we have broken into the forties.

The amount raised so far is about £650. That means at least 3 months of basic running costs. This is great news and means I can concentrate on planning and executing changes to the site that will make it more compatible with smartphones and tablets, as well as more secure. It will also make it more connected to social media, which should mean more people will become aware of us here and, hopefully join in. Before raising this money I would instead have to devote a portion of my time to earn the money to cover the costs instead of developing the site so it could be better equipped to pay its own way.

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

I had no problems making a (very small) donation, so it's working for me.
I also had a very nice email from Ian to thank me, when in truth, it's him who should be thanked !

Thanks Rob! The donation rate has, as you'd expect, slowed down now, but it's still going and I have some more thank you emails to write

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

I know things are hard for everyone these days but I see this thread has had over 3600 views surely a few more can give £1 or so as it does add up and all will benefit as there are lots of tips and help given to everyone.

Just my thoughts

The donation idea will only work in the short term and means some members are very kindly giving donations and some not. The only long term solution to this problem is to make the forum strictly "Subscription Only" thereby making it equal to everyone who wishes to view.

It is a big step to take but if funds are required on a regular monthly basis it's probably the only long term solution which would be fair to all concerned.

By coincidence, I have just popped back from visiting another Photography forum and was there reading a thread about subscriptions. I pay to it £10 per year for Premier membership. Apologies for being repetitive. I know of at least 2 members of this forum who are also members there. I don’t know them personally, only seen there names flash up on the site. The forum format used is different to the one here. Here is link to the format suppliers: http://xencentral.com

Getting back to this club, I am in support of your idea John, but would prefer an annual subscription and to make it optional, rather than a mandatory monthly sub. I would not want to buy in the idea that non paying members are divided into “them and us”, someone did mention that thought. My fear is that a monthly sub could scare off folks to less expensive sites, but what do I know

However, at the end of the day, Ian is the owner and what he does to it is down to him. Hopefully the club will survive and prosper.

Hi Phil, the problem is, any subscription system that is optional, and provides the same facilities to non-subscribed members as subscribed ones means the subscribed members are funding the non subscribed and removes any practical incentive for anyone to sign up.

As this is a photo forum based mostly on comments, photo submissions, selling and buying photo related gear and interaction between members, If subscriptions were voluntary, I can't think of any suggestion, apart from maybe restricting the For Sale Section, that would provide incentive for anyone to subscribe.

I agree totally on your thoughts of a "them and us situation" but voluntary subscriptions would surely create just such a 2 tier system. If access to the forum was via subscription only, it means everyone pays the same fee, enjoys the same facilities, therefore avoiding any suggestion of a two tier system.

As you quite rightly say, the decision is up to Ian to make. Any opinions we may have, and no doubt they all vary considerably, are simply to add food for thought to what must be a difficult process. At least it provides us with something to talk about

Regards,

John

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

You have to be careful not to overthink this, two of the forums i use i subscribe to,i get subscribing member against my name on one and contributor on the other, after that it varies one has a chat box i can use the other allows PM ing, only small things but hey its only a few pounds a year.
I would not be interested in a have to subscribe situation, two-tier ime ok with.
