Lepismium monacanthum in Flower

Placed in various other genera e.g. as Pfeiffera monacantha, this species is found in NW Argentina & SW Bolivia at altitudes of 300 to 2000 meters.

It grows as an epiphyte (not in soil) but unlike many such species, which have white or cream flowers, it has orange flowers, the one shown here measuring about 12mm diameter. Like the vast majority of cacti, the plant has no leaves but the photosynthesis occurs in the green stem, which is flattened, strap-like and +/- parallel-sided.

I obtained this one two months ago, as an unrooted cutting. It had one emerging orange bud, which I expected to abort but which produced this flower. It opened partially on the first day and more fully on the second day.

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, f11, hand-held.

The stereos are crosseye. The first pair is from the first day.
