Re: Site changes probably need to be made

What is the option for those of us who do not use or want to use Flickr etc?

Is there any value in uniting 4/3 user and the e group site now that the tie in to Olympus is lost.

Thanks for all your hard work and finance keeping the site running.

Can you explain how to send a donation?

Ed

Hi Ed,

There is a donation button on the near top left of the home page - PayPal has easy to follow instructions from there.

Four Thirds User is quite different in ambition and content to the e-group; it's an editorial site with a forum on the side and it's not country or brand-specific. Once it's back into shape I hope e-group members will enjoy using it as well as the e-group.

Retiring the galleries should not affect historical images. You just won't be able to add new ones.

Sorry Ian, but I feel any comparison to FTU is frankly a definite backward step. Since the FTU forum was updated about a year ago it has lost the majority of active members, with many previously complaining about the update. The average post rate in FTU is now approximately 1 post per week and sometimes even longer. FTU is now extensively used more for private messaging and spamming rather than genuine posting.

IMHO, any attempt to change the current format of this forum to anything resembling the updated FTU running VBulletin, would be a massive mistake.

Just my personal opinion.

Thank you for your vote of encouragement, John.

I will try to explain. The change at FTU was experimental. The forum was already very quiet and there was little risk in experimenting there. I certainly wasn't going to make radical changes here first.

The exercise was fruitful; it proved that version 4 of the vBulletin software and the DragonByte gallery was not the answer. I tried to get DragonByte to make some customisations to their gallery but they weren't interested. Basically, the market for host your own galleries is pretty much dead.

FTU is to all intents and purposes dormant but still accessible and it will be a guinea pig for a little while longer. I won't make any big changes to the e-group until the FTU forum is working to an acceptable standard.

Ian

Ian, you did ask for feedback which I politely provided. If you only want positive feedback and encouragement then I'm sure others will be more than happy to provide it.

My response was honest and genuine regarding FTU and I still maintain that any change to the E-Group forum to the format FTU operates under would be a retrograde step.

Sorry if my original comment, and this one, isn't what you hoped to see but at least as a frequent visitor to FTU, it is a genuine opinion.

John

Good morning Ian, I am a member of a Rover 75 forum. Their vBulletin is old, but the galleries and other features work ok.....

https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/

It has a gallery of members cars and anything related to the members Rover 75, MG ZT or other cars they own. I find it useful to be able to check out their cars now and again. The gallery is arranged in alphabetical order to the members name. The forum is still on vBulletin 3.8.6. The format works for quite an active membership. On the forum, I take responsibility for announcing the Birthdays.
I use Flickr for the serious stuff and I use Photo Bucket for the fun stuff.

Your forum Ian, doesnít have a corporate feel about it. Itís one of the reasons I was attracted to it. Itís friendly, supportive, specialist and boutique.

Re: Site changes probably need to be made

I do see a downturn in photo forums in general, especialy when they are one make specific, for better or worse (i feel for worse) social media is taking the place of them.
You will always have a hardcore of users who actually enjoy two way interaction with fellow users but i do think that number is reducing.
Hopefully, you will find a format that not only keeps committed members but attracts new ones.
I used to be very active on a Nikon forum in my Nikon days but although still popular i see a downturn on that when i visit.

Re: Site changes probably need to be made

Out of interest, are there any niggles about the current layout of the site that I might be able to address in the short term?

Re: Site changes probably need to be made

I've never used the gallery here so I wouldn't miss it, all my images are on Flickr.
I'm perfectly happy putting my images on Flickr - if they change their terms in future then I'll deal with that when it happens rather than worry about it now.

I would very much like to see a mobile friendly version of this site at the moment it's so painful to use that I very rarely bother.

Thanks for all your hard work

I'm quite happy with the layout. Perhaps a quick link to upload photos to the gallery would save me a few clicks. It is also a bit odd to separate signature, details, and profile but not enough, I contend, to stop people using the site.

I agree with many that the gallery is a bit clunky - it is easy to upload but very difficult to sort and search and hence find the right link when inserting a photo into a thread. Any post-uploading sorting invalidates any link. However the advantage of having forum specific hosting far outweighs any niggles in my opinion (I know I am in a minority).

I use the full forum on my iPhone - my eyesight seems to be used to using small text on the phone though, but even so I find it works fine, except for the need to zoom in a bit to hit the "go to latest post" button on the new posts page.

Ian several of the other forums I use have the ability to post straight into the thread with an "upload file/picture" button, is this feature available on v5 of vBulliten?

Yes, this is possible. In fact this feature has been part of the forum since day one as an attachment. Because we had the gallery I reduced the functionality of attachments for photos. vB5 has a more advanced system which is almost like a simple gallery but not embracing the whole membership - it only manages your own photos.
