Fiction becomes reality!

A few days ago, 'NewsTump' posted a spoof news item:

"NRA insists Florida school mass-shooting caused by ‘dangerous lack of guns’"

http://newsthump.com/2018/02/15/nra-...-lack-of-guns/

"The fact is that had the teachers been armed, they could have seen a weird guy approaching and shot him in the face, then perhaps again in the belly or in the testis,” he told the gathered press.

Now Trump is considering arming teachers:

Job done!

Re: Fiction becomes reality!

H'mmm. Just consider the scenario. Woman teacher sees pupil pull out an AR-15 assault rifle. She instantly tries to get her concealed Walther PPk out of its shoulder holster, and it gets tangled in her bra strap. Pupil spots what she's doing, aims the AR-15 at her, and....she's toast. He then has a free hand to fire at will at the other students.

Now consider scenario 2. Woman teacher sees the pupil as above, successfully gets her Walther PPK out, aims at the pupil, and....misses, hitting the girl sitting just behind and to the left of him. She panics, tries again, and hits someone else. Then he turns, aims at her and...

Some other points. To be genuinely effective, and actually stop a would-be killer, the teacher realistically would not only need a .45 ACP Colt or equivalent (for the stopping power), but would have to fire very accurately - head or throat - so as to instantly put him/her out of action. How many teachers would be able to do that? And how many teachers would be able to calmly aim and pull the trigger? Even if all the boxes were ticked, accurate aim in a crowded panicking classroom? What would be the level of 'collateral damage' acceptable to Donald Trump? Or the other parents?

I don't think I need to say any more.

Seems to me that Trump is saying what (it seems to me) Americans have been saying forever 'To counteract the problem with guns, you have to have a gun'. Something like that anyway.

Re: Fiction becomes reality!

Apparently, New York policemen hit just 18% of their targets. Would be interesting to know how many were armed or shooting back. Trump’s hypocrisy is sickening.

When reality becomes fiction:

Guns are only a small part of the total issue. The solution, to the major issue on this problem, could be, that if we were as courteous and polite to others as we expect all others be to us, then the problem(s) would disappear?

IF only.

I'm afraid that won't influence someone who has a mental problem of the sort needed to go and kill others.

One possibility could be metal detectors on the way into the school, and also on the way into every classroom. But then you need an armed officer to remove any guns or knives found.

That's the reason I applied the . Sadly, one has to live in hope even if it's doomed to failure.

Perhaps the best defense would be to issue each teacher with a live hand grenade.

The correct procedure would be for the teacher to ask the class "Who knows how to pull the pin?".

Re: Fiction becomes reality!

Correct me if I am wrong, but America is not the only country in the world where gun ownership is almost universal. (Israel and Switzerland come to mind.)

However, America seems to be the only half-civilised country where gun violence has become seriously out of hand.

Could it be that America is simply a violent country, and that American television, films and video games have normalised this kind of behaviour in the minds of vulnerable and mentally unstable individuals?

I cannot help but notice that almost every American film and TV show that I have ever seen seems to feature some kind of violence; even those intended for family viewing.

The Americans also seem to struggle to do anything quietly and without overreacting. I remember a TV interview with General Sir Peter de la Billière on the eve of he first Gulf War. Sir Peter simply said, very calmly, "we have been given a job to do, we have some of the best trained and equipped forces in the world, and we shall do that job to the very best of our abilities".

He was followed by an American General, who could hardly move for medals, who just bragged "we're just gonna blast these b******s off the face of the earth".

Says it all really doesn't it?

Only 3 countries have the right to bear arms in their constitutions, USA, Guatemala and Mexico: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_..._and_bear_arms

It seems there is some good kick-back going on now in the US - for example: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...-a8221681.html

Re: Fiction becomes reality!

I think there are a good few guns in Norway and Sweden and Finland, but they don't seem to shoot each other. All about culture, I guess.
So far as my little joke is concerned, all they would need is a thirty inch chain attached one end to the grenade pin, the other to the belt, then they just have to chuck it - hard. A stun grenade might be a good idea, perhaps...

Re: Fiction becomes reality!

The risk of a teacher being outgunned by a perpetrator is very real - no pistol would be very effective against the firepower of an AR15.

Call me old fashioned, but I think the best tool for the job is a Thompson SMG, especially with the drum magazine beloved of old-time Chicago gangsters - John Dillinger knew that he could do a good day's work with one! It's designed for close combat and can lay down enough fire for a miscreant to keep their head down until reinforcements arrive.

It's important that the Thompson should be on prominent display to discourage potential attackers, preferably on the teachers desk which will enable quick access - it's an intimidating bit of kit. One or two spare magazines would also be advisable, but they can always go in the desk.

Jim
