Photographic Survey Of Wales

As I have already mentioned in a thread, I've been working on the history of the Cardiff Naturalists' Society who are 150 years old and I have the honour to be a former president of.

I have already identified that one of our former presidents was solicitor for Henry Fox Talbot who many of you are probably aware of http://www.cardiffnaturalists.org.uk...s/150th-16.htm. if you don't know who Fox Talbot is then tut tut.. time you hit Wikipedia

I've just been working on some more and come across this wonderfully optimistic proposal for a project in our old transactions from 1912

you can read it all on-line if you like https://journals.library.wales/view/1373290/1375094/114 but some snippets from me are

Such a collection of permanent photographs, lantern slides, and negatives, whilst being of great value and interest at the present time, will be increasingly so to future generations.

GEOLOGY. Land contours. River courses (It is advisable to secure the help of a Geologist in deciding upon the extent of the picture and the best point of view.) - so please take me out with you at all times

TOPOGRAPHY. Landscapes of special beauty or interest. Views of towns and streets. Homes of famous men and women. - Back then there was probably less chance of the police stopping you doing so

RECOMMENDATIONS. It is desirable that the following recommendations should be observed as far as possible.
(a) Photographs submitted should not be smaller than quarter-plate nor, preferably, larger than whole-plate.
(b) Prints are preferred on platinum or carbon, although untoned bromides are admissible. They should be trimmed but unmounted.
...
(h) The collection of record prints will be deposited in the National Museum of Wales, under regulations making it accessible to the public. - hmmm you try getting into the collections these days

Re: Photographic Survey Of Wales

Much to say here Shen in total support of what you are doing. I believe the greatest gift 'photography' delivers, is it's ability to be a matter of record. In my view mainly 'human record', because that is the most transient. Ok rocks and sea shores may degrade over time, but it's people and 'the spirit of place', that gets done in.
