Re: Old Gear

Too sentimental to sell mine off. They are now sitting in an airtight container with several packets of silica.

I can understand that. I have a friend who used to work for Jessops and he has over 100 cameras at home. He never uses them

Hi Phil,

You could try Ffordes, they sell photo gear on a commision basis and do accept old film cameras.

http://ffordes.com

Hope this helps,

John

Thank you very much John. A big help. One camera is quite special and launched a certain brand into the SLR market in 1959 and has the full kit of lenses from that year. My wife wants rid of the old gear, which she perceives as clutter.

What have you got? I've recently returned to film (but still using digital as well, it's too convenient not to do so) and could be interested depending on make and condition.

Re: Old Gear

Have a display on a shelf in my study.
May take it down and put them back in a box as they are dust magnets.

Do you have any OM stuff? I love the old OM cameras and lenses. Maybe not so much to actually use, but just to appreciate in terms of their build quality.

In the late 70's I was humming and harring between a Pentax MX and the Olympus OM1, and even though the articles comparing the two seemed to favour the Olympus optics, I opted for the MX because I favoured the more conventional layout of the shutter speed control.
I've made a recent return to shooting film, and picked up a reasonably prices M6 from Ffordes. The choice was simple, I already have Leica lenses which now share their time with my M240. Still have the MX, but by comparison with the rangefinder the optical viewfinder seems noticeably dark and is more difficult to focus. On the other hand the RF is a breeze to focus in almost any light.

Re: Old Gear

The old lenses get used (at least many of them) - I think I've used at least 30 old manual lenses on one or more of my digital cameras.
I don't think there are any older manual SLR lenses that can't be used with todays mirrorless cameras many rangefinder lenses are adaptable too.
Some of the newer lens models such as the Minolta Vectis range (APS-H film, rare lens mount with all electronic control) on the other hand are rather limited, without focusing/aperture control they're not very practical & the range is too unusual to be worth anyone making an adapter that communicates with them electronically.

I now have many more film cameras now than I ever had when using film. I keep promising myself I'll give some of them a go, but haven't got round to it. The medium format & large format models are most likely to actually end up being used at some point.

Re: Old Gear

I thought owning and using 'old gear' was the antidote to GAS, if it is it's not a complete cure I might say. My mind has already switched on to medium format, and we all know where that will lead!
