Anyone use Peli cases?

Looking at getting a permanent home for all the gear that allows for transport as well.

They do a couple of wheeled cases that are hand baggage sized, so "could" be used for carry-on (if the rules still allow it next time I fly) or as hold baggage if need be, also allows for a couple of more adventurous holidays involving water to be considered!

Are they as indestructible/secure as they claim?

Re: Anyone use Peli cases?

They seem to be fairly indestructible, and are also waterproof.

I have a few for carrying equipment, and one with equipment built in.

The whole idea with the bigger bags is that if they have to be thrown into the hold they should come out at the other end with everything intact, but of course you'll need suitable foam liners.

However, Peli cases are very pricey.

I have on occasions asked for hold baggage to be hand searched, or to go through hand-baggage x-ray scanners (as oversized baggage) to protect films and delicate equipment that couldn't be taken as hand baggage. Whether that would wash now I really don't know.

Re: Anyone use Peli cases?

There are probably comparable quality competitors at a more realistic price.

Re: Anyone use Peli cases?

I had one fitted out to hold the E1, a computer and a few lenses for when all items bigger than a paper back book had to be checked in the hold.

The equipment survived several trips across to the US, what I missed though was that on the last day of a trip all the kit was locked away in the boot of the car (ok I could have thought ahead and not locked up the Pelicase until just before baggage drop).

Re: Anyone use Peli cases?

I've been using them for decades in various sizes. I've also got three knockoffs that I use for surplus equipment. My original Pelican from the early '80s travelled at least 10,000 miles strapped to the back of various motorcycles in all weather and some very high speeds on occasion.

The knockoffs are probably 80% of the quality of Pelicans but at a third of the price. I wait for the knockoffs to come on sale at half price so they're even cheaper then.

The nice thing about the genuine Pelicans is you can get them with a padded insert instead of foam.

Re: Anyone use Peli cases?

This is one size of the knockoffs I use,

https://www.princessauto.com/en/deta...ox/A-p8486029e

I wait until they're on sale at $35 or $40. Princess Auto are probably buying them from China so I wouldn't be surprised if the same case was available in the UK.

This one is very close in size to my 1550 Pelican,

https://www.princessauto.com/en/deta...ox/A-p8486037e

I use one for a lot of my OM primes and macro equipment.

The German B&W cases are similar to Peli:

I keep my gear in this one (but wouldn't want to walk far with it wen full!)

Re: Anyone use Peli cases?

We use them to take cameras caving - the small ones that is - and they are excellent

Peli used to come to caving conference every year and use us to destruction test and give feedback until some ******rd stole a lot from their stand one year and they never came back

I always buy original Peli and I would not trust my gear to a knock off given I have seen how these are tested and made and they are also really useful for survey points when mapping lava tubes as well

Before anyone asks..

The water bottle is fulfilling 2 important needs 1. carry water, 2. Ensure the survey point is away from the rock as its magnetic lava and even a small separation makes a lot of difference (the guy taking the reading is resting his DistoX surveying equipment on a bottle of the same height therefore we are consistent in our offset

regards
Andy

Re: Anyone use Peli cases?

The Peli cases are very high quality, but they will use all your baggage allowance before you put your kit in. The newer AIR versions are lighter in all but cost!

I use them to transport my air-rifle when competing abroad, superb, though it never ceases to amaze me how much hammer the cases get in the hold and all the battle scars they end up with after each trip.
