Yes Phill, its a Ioptron SkyTracker. The gadget turns the camera at the same speed as the stars move. Thus allowing longer exposures. Theoretically you could expose for hours. It has to be aligned to true north, it has a small scope to pinpoint the North Star. You can buy one for less than £300 new if you shop around.

I have a large 8" telescope which is magic, but is heavy and effectively can only be used in my garden. Alas light pollution reduces its effectiveness. This camera tracker will allow me to go to dark places (!) and photo the heavens..

Another moon...........
by Mark Johnson, on Flickr

Sorry Folks, moon is getting too much exposure. But this is with the 300mm F4 + TC1.4 on a tripod, about 15 images stacked in Registax………….

Makarians Chain of Galaxies. M86 in the middle.
Amazing how many galaxies are in this area of sky.

Needs a lot more exposure time and my guiding was not good enough.

Re: Communal Night-Sky Photography Thread

Blimey is that really the ISS... all I've managed in the past is a streak of light on a long exposure. Well done Mark. Thanks for the Panny comment too

Phill, it does not make the Pany 100-400mm bad. Yesterday, I was photoing three spoonbills at WWT. They were so close (15 metres or so) that the Pany would have been the better lens, zoomed maybe to 200mm. Its about the only time I have missed the zoom capability. See the bird thread...…...
