Yellow wall comes out grey?

Gobsmacked, EM-1ii shows my yellow wall a grey.

I was just playing around 'snapping' some tulips my wife had just stuck in a vase.

The wall is primrose yellow, similar to the yellow tulips, the lighting was good from a window to the right.

The shot is a SOOC JPG LSF, mode natural with no adjustments, 1/80 @ f2.8.

I shot RAW as well, so it could be adjusted.

I'm thinking that the multitude of colours in front of the wall somehow gave the camera a real headache thus producing a grey wall.

Explanations welcome please.

RAW PP'd in LR6....WB has been changed to 'SHADE".
The wall in question has been 'DULLED-DOWN' significantly and vignetted slightly.

Re: Yellow wall comes out grey?

This is what automatic white balance (AWB) does. It saw the yellow wall and made it grey. I doubt it was the mainly the flowers in front that caused it, it would have been the huge proportion of the total area that was yellow.

I went to the red rock area in the USA and found when I got home that all the rocks were grey. Because I take raw+jpg that was easily fixed. Process all the raw images with AWB turned off. In that case I simply selected sunshine white balance instead.

In your case you need to process the raw files with the appropriate white balance setting, if that was natural light indoors then perhaps Cloud or Shadow, something like that.

Brilliant, thanks it works a treat.

I have a yellow wall now with 'shade' WB selected.

Just amazed the influence AWB can have, another reason to shoot RAW as well.

Re: Yellow wall comes out grey?

Why do you want a yellow wall as a backdrop to a subject(s) that contains yellow.

Re: Yellow wall comes out grey?

I would imagine it was because the wall was yellow. It is what I would want. I don't like grey snow either.

Another reason why shooting JPEG only has its limitations.

Re: Yellow wall comes out grey?

AWB was described by Damien Demolder (Former Editor of AP) as "the invention of Satan"...

As I do most of my work in the studio, I have a CWB set at 5600K and view this in much the same way as using "Daylight" Film.

But with ORF+jpg set, any "strangeness" can be easily corrected.

Good to know that you have a solution.

Re: Yellow wall comes out grey?

It's useful to 'shoot' some slide film now and again, it's a good way to train the eye. (And yes, I'm aware of choosing a film type appropriate to the light source, to filter or to modify the light, eg using flash with appropriate colour temp.)

Re: Yellow wall comes out grey?

Dave - Please will you postt the corrected image so thatwe can compare images, in the original image I thought the green vegetaion was a little mean, ie not luxurious enough - however my colour sense does tend to technicolor as a default.

Re: Yellow wall comes out grey?

I leave the white balance on auto and expect to adjust it in LR...

All the pictures I posted from Duxford the other day needed adjustment, but not a consistent 5600K setting style adjustment as the mix of natural (yes there was a tiny amount) and artificial lighting changes across the floor of the building. I find the camera gets it right around 90% of the time.
