E-5+50-200 For Motorsports.Any thoughts?

Hi everyone.
I am thinking of moving up to an e-5 from an e-30 to use at some BTCC races next season.As this is a significant purchase I would appreciate any thoughts/comments.I have been using the hire service this year(which has been fantastic) with regards to lenses and have mainly used the 50-200 with either an ec-14 or 20 converter

Sounds a good combination but I probably wouldn't use the converters as they lose you a lot of light and how close or far will you be away from the action. Why not try out on passing motorway traffic?

At a guess I would say that's rather a nice combo, says I without a hint of envy
I've used the E-30 + 70-300mm combo and that was doing pretty well at BTCC Croft in good lighting conditions and getting me close to the action, so the E-5, 50-200 & EC-14 convertor will ensure good coverage for just about every eventuality. The telephoto at 300mm was also good for grab shots of the models and stars in the pitlane walkabout.

Much will depend upon the circuit but at Croft most of my images with a passing car filling most of the frame were taken at a lens setting of about 100-150mm, with the more distant action shots using the full 300mm. Quite a few of the shots at 300mm have an aperture around f10, so the convertor shouldn't pose too many problems in good conditions and will ensure a reasonable focus depth of field.

I've had a 50-200 for what must about 5 years first on an E-1 and then and E-3. Its a great lens especially at shorter focal lengths. After haveing used a 150mm F2 I realised that the 50-200's weaker spot is fully extended and fully open. Just where you use it for motor sport. When you add a converter resolution drops off a a little. Changing the camera will not change this it may be you can use a slightly higher ISO get keep lens in its sweet spot. Would this justify cost of upgrading from E-30 to E-5?

If I was to change anything with my kit it would be in invest in SHG lenses before an E-5. I realise its more money but I think that the way ot improve quality of pics at longer focal lengths.

Would also be interested in what others think?

Well I certainly think Chris's images at Croft demonstrate how competent the 70-300mm is in good light but I would imagine the 50-200mm, even with a 1.4x to reduce the aperture by one stop, would focus a fair bit faster and more accurately. I found a good lens for rallying, where you are a LOT closer to the subject, was the 40-150mm without converter and now I would use the Leica14-150 with or without. Certainly the way to go is HG/SHG glass first and then camera upgrade. Apart from a little gain in noise performance and weatherproofing the E5 won't give you significantly better results in these conditions but better glass will.

I find the 50-200 fine for the tracks I visit, gets you in close enough.
Taken from the in field at Donnington with a 50-200 on my E1.

Not done BTCC my motorsport is mainly British and world superbikes Rallying and Rallycross.
I have used 3 lens for motorsport, starting with 70-300 with E-510 then E-3 Moving on to 50-200 and 90-250. 70-300 is a very good lens for the price but it has it limitation in low light and in focus speed.
50-200 I take with me along with the 90-250, as it is compact, reasonably light, focus is accurate and fast. I rarely use a converter although I have both 1.4 and 2x. I find it has to be a day with very good light before I would use one.
The 90-250 for it's image quality, brightness and speed but if you pan with it your arms can get very tired. Yes it is better on a monopod but you can't always pan smoothly with it a monopad. That is why I still use the 50-200.
Currently I'm thinking of upgarding from E-3 to E-5, mostly I've read good reports from people who have upgraded.

Some tremendous shots being shown on this thread, and really impressed with the comparative shots from Derek - really top notch quality and now I want a 50-200 & 90-250mm!!

Thanks for showing these, as it's good to see how well Oly competes with the very best, and they are all a good advert as to why no-one should be worry when we see the headlines - as always, it's A/. the photographer B/. the lens and then C/. the camera
Also as an aside,
the 90-250mm was released in or about Nov 2005
the 70-300mm was released in or about Oct 2007
the 50-200mm was released in or about Jan 2008
So the oldest lens seems to have no problems giving us top notch quality (not surprising really), which perhaps is why some of us shouldn't worry about when some brilliant new E-system DSLR is going to come out. What we've got available is good enough for most purposes!

Chris, if your writing a list of lenses then don't dismiss the 150mm f2. I hired one for a week and I still like the pictures I could produce with it.

While it does not have the flexibility of the 50-200 it has a speed ( aperture ) and sharpness that is very impressive.

I've been very tempted by the couple that have appeared on here for just over 1,000 secondhand.




I just need to hire the 300mm for a weekend.

I have used the E-5+50-200 SWD combination for banger racing, which is quite manic as the cars are all over the place, but the focusing has always managed to keep up and enabled me to get sharp action shots
