Olympus 150 - 400

More info on this new lens now available on M43 Rumours. It has an integrated 1.25 converter and an additional 2x converter.

I donít think it will be cheap.

Re: Olympus 150 - 400

I wonder if the 2x converter will fit the 300mm f4 and 40-150 f2.8 as well?

Re: Olympus 150 - 400

Yes, I'm sure it will be a great lens .... But I've a feeling that they have lost the chance to give us something at a comparable price to the Panny 100-400 and in the process may lose more potential buyers than they will get if it is too high priced.

I, personally, was hoping for a good alternative to the Panny, and at a similar (ish) price because I would have preferred to buy Oly, but if the new lens is much over, say £1500 then they will have forced me to go Panny when I'm ready for a longer zoom.

IF the rumours site is correct and it's F4 (which I still doubt) then it'll probably be over £10,000 !!

Re: Olympus 150 - 400

Much as I would like a 150-400mm to shoot garden birds I think the price may a bit steep just for this. However if the 2x converter fits the 40-150mm then this will be on next year's christmas list.

Oh, and how do you "build in" a 1.25x converter or is it a slot in like a rear mounted filter?

Canon have had a 200-400 f4 with a built in 1.4 converter for years, you just flick a switch and it swings into position all internally. Very good but very very expensive.

This is just what I want but the price may be a bit too much hope it's not too expensive.

The Canon one is 1.4x If the Olympus is really 1.25x then that points to it being an f5.6 lens. Otherwise why not make it 1.4x ?

Re: Olympus 150 - 400

But that would make it an f8 with the tc clicked in not ideal for wild life when we need a very fast shutter speed -roll on January

1.25x on f5.6 would make it about F6.3, similar to the Panasonic?

Re: Olympus 150 - 400

Well the rumours put me off buying a Panny for Christmas but if the price is going to be 10 grand I'll never get one and will go for the Panasonic.

Re: Olympus 150 - 400

Unless you need that sort of lens urgently Phill then I would wait and see what is announced next month. There are supposed to be more than one telephoto lenses announced and the rumours site doesn't always get the details right.

Phill, Iíd recommend spending a bit more and going for the 300mm with the MC-14, the lens is faster even with the TC fitted and there is a difference in the images taken with the Panasonic/Olympus lenses.

My wife had her 100-400 replaced by Panasonic, other than to take a couple of test images, she hasnít used the 100-400mm since it was replaced, she uses her Oly 300mm.
