There is a thread on Mu-43.com started by Ctein - it seems that dissatisfaction with Panasonic is not confined to the UK or the 8-18. I am not sure how to link it, but the thread is called “Panasonic Repair Service Woes”.

My reading is that it's cheaper for Panasonic to replace a lens under warranty, than to set up a world wide repair facility; probably a purely business costing decision.

That is, if a lens dies under warranty they will just swap old for new, rather than repair.
If it dies post warranty, or you damage it, optically/mechanically; tough luck, they can save costs on an unneeded repair facility, and maybe even make money selling you a new replacement. From what I've read here and elsewhere, they even charge almost full whack, thus also getting some of what would be the dealer's profit margin for themselves.

So pleased that this is an Olympus forum, where almost all related posts praise the Oly facility, warranty, and after sales service.

The evidence suggests they don't have the infrastructure in place to repair their lenses, for me that's too risky a proposition to invest anything significant with Panasonic.
You are on your own if you damage the lens or if a warranty repair is disputed or if you're out of warranty.

I keep updating about the issue and Alfs experience on the Panasonic users forum website - https://www.lumixgexperience.panason...hp?f=13&t=6445 I haven't had anyone from Panasonic get in touch and I do feel that I have done something really 'unspeakable' but principles matter to me and I hope they will eventually reach out to Alf, but don't hold my breath.

Also I posted in this thread http://e-group.uk.net/forum/showpost...3&postcount=17 about my solution to the 100-400 lens using my Canon lens with a metabones adapter. I was very, very happy with the results.

I was under the impression that Alf had already purchased a brand new lens, in which case, from Panasonic's point of view, not only was the repair issue never opened but it is now definitely closed. I therefore fail to understand how he is now able to extract a better result.

The link re- "the lady in Canada" refers to a faulty Panasonic lens so is a totally different situation than the one Alf was unfortunately faced with.

The moral behind this discussion is very simple: Don't buy Panasonic

Fair point about the underlying cause in Alf’s case, John, and that had been lost in my poor memory, but that thread does illustrate that Panasonic might be reviewing their unwillingness/incapability to repair these products at all.

Seems to me that’s worth alerting here.

Panasonic did not repair the Canadian lady's lens, they replaced it with a new one. This of course was a good result for the lady concerned but certainly not a decision which is indicative of any review of their unwillingness to undertake repairs.

Unless I'm mistaken the whole point of this discussion is that Panasonic are refusing to repair or supply spare parts for their lenses, their only solution being a new lens. In the case quoted in the link, Panasonic for whatever reason decided to replace the ladies faulty lens, which may have only been slightly out of warranty.

This effectively means if you purchase a Panasonic lens and damage it accidentally, or it develops a fault when significantly out of warranty, it will be impossible to get it repaired. Your only option provided by Panasonic, as in Alf's case is to purchase a new lens.

As the recent thread on the OM-D E-M5 indicated, Oly seem to be adopting similar tactics by stopping the supply of spare parts but at least only with products a few years old and not with current products as seems to be the case with Panasonic.

Panasonic appear to have manufactured the 100-400 lens in such a way that it is impossible to dismantle and repair hence their only solution being a new lens with no spare parts being available to 3rd party repairers. This alone should deter any prospective purchaser from buying into anything Panasonic now or in future.
