Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

Really bad news about Panasonic service. I hope you manage to resolve it via insurance or ....

This is just another reason why I'm waiting .....and hoping ...... and praying, that Olympus will finally get it's act together and give us an alternative to the Panny 100-400.

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

I had a play with that lens Mark. It's nice to use but it didn't seem much lighter than a 40-150 to me although I didn't have them side by side. I did like the 100-400 though even though it's a bit aperture limited.

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

The 50-200 m4/3 range is very useful for many purposes when you’ve got a single camera body, and I used to enjoy my old 4/3 version.

The Panny is significantly lighter than the 40-150 (around 30% by memory) but I am a bit concerned at the smaller aperture at the longer end with their teleconverter. It’s also extremely spendy as introduced.

However, I really like the Oly 40-150 on one body and the 300 on the other for many quickly-changing wildlife and sport opportunities (teleconverted as appropriate), and I suspect I’d miss the shorter end quite often of the Olympus, and more often than benefitting from the Panny zoom at greater range.

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

This is being payed for by my home insurance after ironing out a little mistake on the insurance company system. Now to sort my insurance properly.

I will be posting it off tomorrow.

Excellent.
Delighted to hear that (although donít be surprised if your premium goes up a bit next year: still well worth claiming though).

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

A great result Alf. Is the insurance payout for a replacement lens, as per Panasonic's offer, or a repair?

It's always worth checking what your home insurance policy covers - you may be pleasantly surprised. Mine replaced a Nikon lens very promptly, when I fell off a wall with it, while birding at my local reservoir. (I was OK but the lens wasn't )

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

Well done Alf. I'm never sure if the house cover would pay out as they may regard the entire collection of photographic equipment to be a specialist item requiring each item to be listed (which might raise the premium a bit).

It probably depends on your policy. Mine covers a maximum amount (which I set at the biggest outfit I'd ever have with me away from home at any one time) and then needs items listed that exceed a certain amount.

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

There's a member over on DPR who is complaining of exactly the same problem (zero Panasonic service capability) after breaking his 100-400. I have to say, I think this is a very poor decision by Panasonic. I have the 8-18 too but in light of this position, it'll definitely be the last Panasonic lens I'll buy. I had a good look at their new 50-200 f2.8-4 at TPS and thought it was an excellent proposition for a zoom lens in this range. But there's no way I'd shell out £1600 on a piece of kit knowing that there is zero after-sales support for it. Shocking!

Bravo to Olympus for an excellent service offering in Portugal. Let's hope it doesn't get closed off to us (or expensive to use) when Brexit happens (OK, sorry, I mentioned the B word!!).

Re: Broken Leica DG 8-18mm

My only investment in Panasonic now is their excellent but very petite 12-32 (second copy I've owned). A few years back I had the 12-35 & 35-100 f/2.8 - great lenses, now usurped by my 12-40 and 40-150.
I must admit after Alf's experience I too would think very carefully about shelling out a significant amount on a Panasonic lens.
It's a real shame because they have some excellent glass.

When I bought my first Panasonic compact (a TZ5) I felt slightly reluctant, as I thought of Panasonic as a consumer goods company. It did, however, prove to be a very good camera until I feel into a stream in Iceland with it. I replaced it with a TZ25 model.

More recently I bought a Pan/Leica 100-400 lens and felt re-assured that Leica were prepared to put their name to it, with a statement on the box that it was manufactured in accordance with Leica quality standards.

If Panasonic really do treat their photo products as disposable consumer goods, then I am very surprised that Leica allow the use of their highly-respected brand name. It's one thing to supply optics within a compact camera and quite a different one to put your name on an entire product. The 100-400 lens is prominently marked 'Leica'.

I would expect Leica to take some responsibility for this product and would suggest that problems of the type described here should be reported to Leica as well, since it is surely a black mark on their reputation.
