Affinity

Not sure if anyone has experienced this problem, but when I reduce either the JPEGS or RAW files that I have processed and saved processed in Affinity, the quality drops dramatically when i reduce them to put into the gallery, any ideas as to why this is so?? Looking at them un-reduced on my 4k screen there is lots of detail there, but gone when reduced..

How much reduction are you actually doing from what pix width and pix height to what new width and height ?

also what quality settings are you using.

I think this site limits file sizes to 500Kb which is usually plenty for most jpegs around 1200px long edge even with quality set between 60 and 80. Although if the picture has a lot of fine detail they can still be too large for the site and so the quality does need to come down.

Does the reduced size jpeg still look good on your own screen before posting ?

Hi Dave,

Yes the images look good prior to reduction, and as soon as I drop to below 1100 x 750 it becomes very 'fuzzy'. I admit that my new screen is giving me detail on both JPEG and RAW that i never saw on my old laptop but I am surprised that by reducing the size the quality drops. I have to say I never got that with Photoshop (can't try it anyway now as I don't have it anymore).....there will be an answer i'm sure .

Think you will find that its always been like that but now you can see the detail better on your new screen.

The other thing to consider is that you need to apply different amounts of sharpening dependent on the final size of your image.

Try Exporting (File> Export) your smaller file with another name rather than Saving or Save As. Also when exporting you have a choice, I don’t have access at the moment but maybe try one of the resizing options other than bilinear. Hope this helps.

That's the way I do it. I leave the full size file, as it is, in Affinity and export another copy to a different folder, renaming and resizing it in the export dialogue box as required.

Thanks for the info .....i've resized this picture as an exported item, and resized after export. The best resolution without change from the full sized file is 1200 x 675, which I think is too big for the gallery upload.
Apart from this problem everything is working hunky dory so far on the new PC, I am pleased with the purchase...
