Preparing for an election

We all know it's coming

I've decided to start getting all prospective candidates sensitised to the issues that are important to me and tought you may appreciate a copy of the relevant sections to possibly share with everyone hoping to represent you.

The major parties all have lists and contact details available

Quote:
Gathering an understanding of your stance on items that are of interest to me ahead of the elections
Quote:
I am trying to gather more of a personal understanding of the prospective candidates who are asking for my vote at the forthcoming election and therefore can I ask you to consider the following requests for your views on specific topics of interest to me. Rather than general rhetoric on the economy and wars which I hear every day

Photographers Rights. I am a keen amateur photographer, but am increasingly concerned by the restrictions that are put on people such as myself by ill informed and poorly trained security staff and police officers who incorrectly use anti terrorism laws to restrict freedoms and try and suppress images of controversial (usually misbehaving police) topics. If you are not aware of this topic please take a look at the following websites and tell me whether you would be an active supporter of these campaigns (http://photographernotaterrorist.org/press-releases/ & http://photorights.org/intro ).

Also relating to this topic is the question of Copyright law which is being considered at present in parliament (See http://copyrightaction.com/digital-economy-bill-mp-letter-template-2 ) a copy of which with some personal statements regarding a copyright breach that has already happened to me has been sent to my current MP for comment and action I would like to understand whether you would be supportive of this campaign and in a more general question whether you would be active in preventing such bad legislation if your party was sponsoring it. In other words can you commit to being an independent voter when needed.
Obviously my emails have had a lot more topics that won't be of interest to most of you.

Regards
Andy

Re: Preparing for an election

Great initiative, Andy. If we want candidates who represent our views then we must make sure the issues that concern us are on the Agenda. I will certainly follow your lead in this and I urge others to do the same.

Re: Preparing for an election

Great initiative!! Too bad I'm not participating in the election by being a foreigner temporary in the country employed by a foreign nation. I probably could vote but it wouldn't affect me as I'm moving in a years time. Sorry!

Re: Preparing for an election

Has this been resolved on "our" behalf?

Am I reading this page wrong, or are the BJP prepared to back the bill?
http://www.bjp-online.com/public/sho...ml?page=873947

And the demonstration in London last night was part of the same bill, but not from the photographers point of view... as such

Re: Preparing for an election

No it just reports that organizations are banding together to speak as once voice

I think it says a lot about how bad it is that NUJ & RPS on one side and BAPLA and Getty are all on the same side for once. Picture libaries stand to lose as much as photogaphers in this

The governement are still pushing for a law that basic allsy states "you can use any picture you like for any reason and you just pay us a nominal feel to keep those pesky photographers off your backs and we'll pay them a 'nominal' fee which Peter Mandelson will decide" if they find out you've used their picture.

It really is as bad a thieves charter as they have in the US

As an amateue who rarely sells pictures other than diret it's not a massive loss in earnings to me, but I resent the fact taht without a visible watermark that my pictures could be considered orphans very easily.

So keep pestering your MP's as they seem to want to put all this in PM's hands before they break for the election

Regards
Andy

Re: Preparing for an election

Ah, the thing that made me ask was the part that stated
Quote:
"In particular on the question of Orphan Works, we believe the Government's concessions on Clause 43 have considerably improved the legislation"
made it sound like they'd reached some form of agreement.

I have never sold an image, and I cant think I ever will, but I dont really like the thought of others using my images in a way that may distort the meaning, or make money for them, without my prior knowledge/consent
