Operation Black Buck - Radio 4 Historical Drama

I caught a facinating drama on Radio 4 yesterday, based upon Operation Black Buck - the Vulcan bombing raids on the runway and air defences at Port Stanley Airport during the Argentinian occupation of the Falklands Islands. The logistical problems of staging these raids were almost insurmountable and fraught with danger, and surprising Heath Robinson ingenuity had to be applied to the aging Vulcans to equip them with suitable navigation equipment and in-flight refuelling systems to make what were at the time the longest ever bombing raids. The effectiveness of this operation, in terms of cost, use of resources and results is in serious doubt, but there can be no denying the effect upon national morale at the time or the clear message of our intent that it sent to Argentina.

A pity that the plane that Ed Grundy was flying had the window problem and he had to abort the mission.

But full marks to him for trying to fix the problem with plastic bags.

Do you mean that he sounded like Ed Grundy from 'The Archers' or that the repair he attempted was a little agricultural?

Thanks for drawing my attention to this. I've just finished listening to it and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in this episode in recent history.

The pilot was played by Barry Farrimond, who also plays Ed Grundy in The Archers.
