Surprisingly, this wasn't taken in the Sahara - it's in France! It's the Dune du Pyla just west of Bordeaux. At a little under 120m high and about 2.7km in length it's the biggest sand dune in Europe.

Spectacular shot, not sure I'd be happy walking on that much sand. Presumably the dune is pretty stable. I think a closer portrait crop would work well too.
