Back in the day, if I needed a character reference done and counter signatory, I could approach my next door neighbour, an MP in London, or the chap across the road, his son is a lawyer and ask either one of them to write me up. Being a lawyer or an MP was a respectable profession to be a member of, but these days I am not so sure.

Apologies if we have any MPs' or lawyers on the forum, no offence is intended

There were many professions including doctors, clerics and schoolteachers who were highly respected at one time, but we are all on first name terms now.

There are of course many type of Lawyer, just as there are cabinet ministers and back benchers. Generally speaking I think it is the Queen's Counsellors (barristers) who give lawyers and cabinet ministers a bad name. Anyone who is paid Łthousands a day to argue dubious points of law will probably be keen to prove their worth. I don't think this should be a reflection on the solicitor that you go to for a house sale or back bench MP's who are generally very principled.

However, I was reminded recently that the last MP to enter Westminster with good intentions was Guy Fawkes!

My eldest daughter is a partner in a large law firm in the provinces (outside the M25!). Whenever I've asked her a question regarding law, she's not been able to answer!

At last we have something in common, my daughter is a lawyer as well. She won't give me any legal advice.

It used to be that you needed a person of certain professional standing (my words) such as Policeman, Doctor, Vicar, to verify your identity for a passport. When I got my professional qualification (Chartered) in 1971 I could suddenly do this.

Sometime (around the millenium?) the law changed and anyone who has known you for at least years ( personally, not a work colleague) can do it. I have done this under both regimes. However, as a retiree from my previous profession, it seems that is another option.

I have written about this many times on various sites:

There are people making vast amounts of money out of this fiasco and that can only come from one source...

Markets went up and down long before Brexit was even thought of. Currency traders make their living out of it.
