Forum enhancements?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I couldn't find a specific area.

I'm wondering if it's possible to add some kind of notifications to this forum like other forums so you can see which of the threads you're subscribed to have had replies etc. I do get email notifications but if I'm subscribed to several threads I have to keep going back to my emails to see which ones. On all other forums I'm on there's a notification 'button', usually next to your private messages.

For me this would make a big improvement and also save me from missing replies and running the risk of 'ignoring' someone if they've specifically replied to one of my posts.

Cheers

I get an email whenever a post I’ve created, or replied to, receives a reply...

Re: Forum enhancements?

I used to get emails too but got fed up of having so many extra emails so I turned it off. For some reason though there are still a few old threads that send me email notifications which I find a bit odd..? Anyway I'd much prefer a notification button like Snerkler suggested. Another way is to look at the User Control Panel that lists the recent post replies too but to be honest I tend to keep forgetting about that tab.

Re: Forum enhancements?

User control panel -> Edit Options -> Messaging and Notification. Notifications within the forum itself would be nice though.

Yep so do I, but as I mentioned in my initial post if I've received several emails from different threads I keep having to go back and forth from the forum to emails and back again, which isn't great.

I've sent a message to Ian asking if this is possible.

I don't believe that this forum stores posts in a "threaded" manner enabling you to ascertain if there has been a reply to a specific post (yours or somebody elses).

However you can look at all the threads you have started, so where you are the original post (OP): right click on your username top right and open, click on the statistics tab, and click on find all threads startd by <name>. Posts are sorted by date of last post and not by the date of your first post. As long as you can remember when you last looked you can see if there have been any updates. In addition, if you are the last poster then, presumably, you must have read all the previous posts and replied (doesn't take any account of where you either "liked" or "thanked" any replies though). This is not quite what you want but it goes some way.

Re: Forum enhancements?

Please correct me if I'm not understanding the request, but I think this is available already

isn't what you are asking for already available under the quick links ...

Quick links ... Subscribed threads

http://e-group.uk.net/forum/subscription.php

Or is it that you want a more summarised email - you can choose the level in the user control panel subscription options as a genera option or a specific option on the thread in question (see attachment)

Andy

Re: Forum enhancements?

If you go to the mu43 forum you'll see that there is a notification on the main page that tells you about replies to threads or even your own posts. It's a very nice feature. However, mu43 is running Xenforo which is a very modern piece of forum software. We're running a fairly old version of vBulletin. I think that Ian has considered an upgrade on numerous occasions recently and I think he's upgraded fourthirds-user.com to a later version of vBulletin. I've no idea whether that later version supports the notifications though.

Definitely something for Ian to respond to for sure.

I've posted something here - https://fourthirds-user.com/forum/fo.../179747-trunks. If someone can comment on it I'll let you know if the notifications work!

Kind of, but not quite as that means you have to navigate to your CP, although that is better than going back to emails as I have been doing.

Here's what I mean though, this is a screen shot from TP. As you'll see you have an "alert" button that is visible on every page (just like the private messages on here). If you hover or click on it it shows you all of the recent activity pertaining to the threads you are subscribed to, and posts you've made. Granted it's only a minor thing but it does enhance user experience imo.
