Audio server

I thought I'd post this here as I know there are several computer experts on this forum that may be able to advise me.

I want to set up a dedicated "server" for all my music MP3 files so that they can be accessed by any PC (or iPhone?) that is on my WiFi connection. I have a spare USB port and several spare Lan connections on my broadband Wireless router that I would like to connect up to the "server". I have in mind using a RAID configured external hard drive array, NAS drive? I could then put it out of the way in a back room and have access to my music anywhere in the house. I would also like to put all my Microsoft Office files on the server so that I don't have multiple copies on different machines that have to be constantly sync'd.

Can anyone recommend hardware, software(?), advice? Does the "server" have to have an IP address or can it be accessed directly from my wireless broadband router?

Thanks,

Steve
