It's interesting to see the different fees different people get, and then match to your viewing/listening habits, some are "worth more or less" than others that you'd not expect, e.g. Vanessa Phelps annoys me so can't be worth more than Zoe Ball and Jo Whiley, but I'm sure others will see it completely the other way around!

My view of comparative salaries at work was if someone got paid more than me for a similar job - good on them for negotiating better than me! (It'd then make me try harder at my next contract renewal!)

Re: Worth M 2.2 ???

Like him or loathe him, Chris Evans is, under that familiar rather goofy and irritating exterior, a very clever guy. Analysis will probably reveal he has been a great asset to the BBC. Should the BBC be paying that much money for him - almost certainly not, but his remuneration is the product of a market for talent and he obviously has great agents and advisers.

John Humphries was clearly very uncomfortable about his c.600K, though at least he had the bottle to be interviewed about it. Again, he probably has very good people looking after his contracts. I'd be surprised if he obsesses about his pay. Again, I don't think he warrants that much but I don't blame him one bit.

My personal feeling is that unless you own a business and you have built it up so it has been successful enough to afford to pay you well, there is little to warrant much more than a couple of hundred thousand a year. The problem is that directors look after their own.

The absolute worst thing is a director joining a company on a huge salary, with share options and a golden hello and then being proved inept and being sacked but leaving with a huge golden redundancy. Even competent directors should not be earning millions - it's immoral, especially if they are stifling the pay and prospects of their own workers in the name of the bottom line.

I may sound like a left-winger, but I'm not at all. I believe in responsible and caring capitalism.

Back to the BBC - with only a few exceptions, I'm sure the salaries of those with similar jobs in the private sector will be significantly higher.

There is plenty of talent out there and I think the BBC should be an opportunity for that talent to bloom. If someone who has benefited from being given opportunity at the Beeb eventually gets to expensive, then someone else with potential should be found to replace them. Working for the Beeb should be a privilege.

What I object to (ongoing) is the use of the word "earns" with these large sums.

God knows!
When he replaced Wogan I stopped listening to Radio 2 on my way to work. He's far too enthusiastic on air; too full of himself.

Re: Worth M 2.2 ???

I reckon the basic problem of today is the amount of BS that gets bandied around by other BS artists. They do say that the easiest person to BS is another BS hitter.

This NT news item sums it up nicely http://newsthump.com/2017/07/19/pret...-real-nursing/

On a similar note, I saw another article about the 'obscene salaries' being had by university Vice Chancellors by one senior MP. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-40654940

Must be nice to be able to force through others high earnings vis FOI whilst able to prevent FOI on your own tax-payer paid salary from becoming common knowlwdge.

Re: Worth M 2.2 ???

I used to like Chris Evans when he first started on BBC GLR (Greater London Radio), he was funny and he played some good music; however these days I find him far too shouty and full of himself. Still, he seems to be very popular and brings in the audience figures - though why the BBC should be chasing ratings is another story! Is he worth his pay packet? Not in my view.

I personally prefer Radio 3 in the mornings for a comparatively gentle awakening. I don't see any of their presenters in the list!

Re: Worth M 2.2 ???

And the irony is, if you added all the salaries together you would be able to afford very few Premiership footballers yet where are the people foaming at the mouth about that? The whole brouhaha is just the Mail and the Murdock media and their hangers-on trying to attack the Beeb (because they know in their heart-of-hearts that they look shoddy and third rate in comparison)

Re: Worth M 2.2 ???

I heard this reported on the beeb last night. It also mentioned the huge disparity between male and female presenters and that some are paid more than your pollies ... well maybe that's quite equirable as the stars command a much wider audience.

Re: Worth M 2.2 ???

Thanks for the Newsthump link, Wally!

I see this as another effort to undermine the BBC by those ideologically opposed to it's existence. Don't expect to see private sector media companies to be made to do the same any time soon.

Paul Dacre earns approximately five times as much as Tony Hall. Before spluttering about the BBC being funded from our taxes, consider that we all pay for private salaries too. The cost of advertising &ct goes on to the prices we pay for goods and services.

Exactly how I find him. Not what I want to hear first thing in the morning when I'm still half asleep

That's sad and worrying because overall the BBC is an amazing national institution which punches far above its weight.

For the annual licence fee how many weeks of Sky subscription channels would you get?

I don't subscribe to Sky or any other channel. I don't watch TV. The News is often "coloured". I am only interested in David Attenborough documentaries and anything from the NHU, which I buy the DVDs or Blu Rays. I did subscribe to the BBC Store but they cancelled that recently.

I have no interest whatsoever in the trash for the masses and have never watched a commercial TV channel in the past 30 odd years.

My time is far too valuable for trivia.
