Sneak peek at the Mk III

Now none of you heard this from me but the prototype OM-D E-M1 MK III has had some serious thought put into it. It's aimed squarely at working pros. It no longer has the exposure modes people are familiar with but a completely new set of picture modes.

Picture modes.

Afternoon mode
Barefoot mode (production models may feature a Bareback mode instead)
Cat mode
Dog mode
Eating fish and chips mode
Friday mode
Grumpy mode
Hello magazine mode
Ink blot test mode (possibly to be renamed Insanity mode in production models)
Jelly mode
Kermit mode
Lake mode (this will be renamed Loch mode on models sold in Scotland)
M mode (no one can work out what the M stands for, it can't be manual as no one would know how to use it)
North mode
Old mode
Purple mode
Queue mode
Rabbit mode
Sandwich mode
Tea mode (notice there isn't a Coffee mode, cat mode being more important to Flickr users)
Universal mode
Village mode
White mode
Xenomorph mode
Young mode
Zone mode

There's a keyboard on the top of the camera, if you need, for example, Sandwich mode you simply start typing sandwich and the camera auto suggests what it thinks you need.

Re: Sneak peek at the Mk III

Dave in our pre release naming meeting to come up with mode names needed it was suggested and I voted in favour that it would be an idea to have a mode to select all the other modes. We called it M as some of the traditional members wanted to be able to use the 1.43 million dial's preprinted with PASM and as the manual setting would no longer be available as a consumer survey has shown that the manual setting was never used by professional photographers who all always used A ( which stands for automatic) for all their work.
One suggestion was a C mode for Choose mode but it was pointed out that this letter had been allocated to Cat 🐈 mode already.

I hope this helps, all will become clear when the new 2.5 page manual which comes when the camera is released.

Ed. Deputy Chairperson mode naming sub
committee.

Re: Sneak peek at the Mk III

Well that explains some of the choice of modes.

The prototype I'm field testing only has a few of the modes finalised. The Barefoot mode could become the Booze mode if users struggle to master the new picture modes. And the Sandwich mode could become the Sedation mode for a similar reason.

It certainly isn't uncharacteristic of me. I got the idea after reading one of the What the Duck comic strips.

Some of the strips are savagely accurate about the state of photography these days.

Where's the "phone" mode for people moving up from their mobile phones?

My doctor has prescribed new personalised medication in the form of tablets with my initial on them, I find them to be long lasting and they help my creativity.
There are some side effects mostly on my left.

I'm not sure we can allow plagiarism on this forum, David!

That's a very good point. Much more useful than Purple mode, what were they thinking. I suspect some of the modes were named by auto correct after some one started typing the next letter in the alphabet.

I don't think any of the modes are same as the duck in the strip went through before he found the right one. By which time he'd missed the shot and the subject had died.

I'm only suggesting Olympus could come up with something as useful.

Another valid point. I was foolishly thinking that there should be an OM2N mode but that would be useful.

Re: Sneak peek at the Mk III

What about Bench mode? This is important as benches feature in many landscape shots, and some portraits too.

Local councils used to be very considerate by specifying 18% grey concrete construction, which was perfect for spot metering, but timber and black metal benches are useless for this purpose.

Maybe Olympus should stick with Sedative mode and change Barefoot mode to Bench mode rather than Booze mode.

Hmm. Not so sure about Sedative mode. Judging by the detritus deposited around park benches I would say Bench mode could cover an unusually wide variety of activities.
