As it will not matter which make IMO some of the early Nikon 300mm with internal focus may be better IQ.

Re: Olympus 300mm f4.5

The 300 f4.5 Zuiko isn't a bad lens at all for its age.

I had a pristine one from my OM-4 days that I only sold a few months ago - it was perfectly usable and was improved by using a Metabones focal reducer adapter. The focus ring is a delight to use, with a direct connection and excellent feel.

However, when the images were compared against the new 300 f4 Pro, eventually I felt it wasn't really worth the space in the photo cupboard and so I gave up the nostalgia. Chromatic aberration near full aperture in the peripheries of the frame was the main problem, which could be tidied up in Capture One, but it's a whole load easier to start off with a crisp image...

If you don't want to afford a 300 f4.0 (or the amazing, massive 4/3 300 f2.8), most people seem to use a m4/3 Oly 75-300 or the Panasonic 100-300. I had one of the Panny's years ago - I'd say it was slightly sharper than the OM Zuiko at 300mm and had quite a bit less CA, but with practice I'd say you could focus quicker with the oldie!

(and, yes, there are a few Canikon lenses that are available more often that will probably outperform it, but I think most of them are bigger & heavier)

Re: Olympus 300mm f4.5

I concur with Dr Mark. The main limitation with the OM 300mm f4.5 is the colour fringing.

I have used a fair few old 300mm manual focus lenses in the past (on E3 DSLR). I found the Canon new FD 300mm F5.6 was preferable to the OM. The cheapest option is the old Photosniper lens TAIR3-PHS. This is as sharp as the OM and fringing is only noticeable in extreme contrast conditions. It is very heavy and the aperture mechanism takes some getting used to though.

All old lens benefit from a good hood as they don't have as good coatings as modern lenses.
