E30 Shutter Problem

My E30 appears to have developed a shutter problem although it might be a little more complicated than that.

I took it out this evening and first shot the shutter sounded funny, as if it was opening but not shutting No pic was recorded. Tried remounting the lens and tried a different lens but no better. Tried changing the battery to no avail.

I switched it to live view to see if the mirror was lifting but I am now stuck with a pink screen with green lines top and bottom. I can't get it back to the menu display as it appears stuck on live view.

Any advice would be much appreciated. I am heading out for a couple of hours to thrash hell out of a guitar but will look back later this evening.

Thanks in advance

Greg (in a very grumpy hec state of mind)

Re: E30 Shutter Problem

Managed to get back to the menu screen and had a chat with oly tech support.

Tried a reset and a firmware update but no joy. Last option before sending it away on holiday is leaving the battery out for 48hrs.

Greg (still grumpy)

Do you need to borrow a camera as a temporary replacement Greg? If so, might be able to help.

Re: E30 Shutter Problem

Thanks for the very kind offer David

I still have my E510 and E500 bodies for back up Both feel very small in the hand now after constant use of the E30.

Spoke to Wilkinsons in Carlisle today and they indicated an average cost of around £90 for a repair. Might go with them rather than oly???

Re: E30 Shutter Problem

Sorry to hear of this Greg, it's a real pain when your pride and joy develops a problem, I hope you manage to get it resolved quick without too much cost.
Looking on the positive side you do have backups, the E-510 and 500 are both very good bodies.

Re: E30 Shutter Problem

Cheers Huw

It could not have happened at a worse time, that is always the case isn't it

We have just bought a wee run around and insured it for our two older kids to learn to drive and our main car has just had a visit to the infirmary

As you say I have two very capable bodies to fall back on so it's not all doom and gloom today. It was yesterday though

Greg (feeling a wee bit better today)

Re: E30 Shutter Problem

I am sorry to hear about the problem with your E-30, Greg. The shutter on mine went crazy once, about two years ago. I took a shot but the shutter stayed open accompanied by a high pitch whining noise. None of the controls would work and in panic I removed the battery to stop it. This did the trick and the problem has never returned since. It was an alarming moment, though.

If it is any consolation, I took my old E-510 with the 40-150 kit lens to a wedding a few weeks ago, as I didn't want to lug the E-30 about all day. I was very impressed by the quality of the images. I genuinely think they were sharper than those from my E-30. I hope you get things sorted out cheaply and painlessly.

Ron

Re: E30 Shutter Problem

Cheers Ron. Glad your problem resolved itself quickly

My E30 is currently lying low in our airing cupboard, keeping cosy and powering down I wont look at it again until Sunday and will keep everything crossed

Re: E30 Shutter Problem

Still no closer to getting this resolved in fact if anything it looks like I will be binning the E30 altogether.

A brief description of the problem was sent to Luton Cameras who have said it sounds like ccd failure. Parts will cost just short of £400 plus vat and labour£120 plus vat

It's a no brainer really.

Gutted - totally, only had the camera about 6 months.

Re: E30 Shutter Problem

Greg I would bend "ears" at Olympus, should this part fail in ? nnnn ? how many ? shutter actuations ?

You say you have had the camera for 6 months but did you register for the 2 yr Olympus Warranty ? Maybe the camera is older than this ? but if not maybe an idea or if your bought it pre loved, ??

Wishing it gets repaired for a more reasonable cost !

Greg, so sorry to hear this. Have you spoken to Olympus?

I hope you win the competition now!

Re: E30 Shutter Problem

I am sorry to hear that Greg. I hate if when such new devices are uneconomical to repair. That is the trouble with sophisticated and complicated modern technology. My E-30 with a 14-42 and 40-150 cost £700 new, so £520 plus VAT for the repair is a ridiculous amount of money. As others have said, I would try contacting Olympus to see if they can help out. However, I imagine they are preoccupied with other matters at the moment.

Re: E30 Shutter Problem

Greg,
Really sorry to hear about your E-30 problems. The suggestion about Johnstones might be worth investigating. If so I'm relatively local to them so if I can help in any way let me know.
