Problems switching on E-30

For about a month I have been using my old E-510 instead of my E-30. Last night when I switched the E-30 on it took a couple of seconds before anything happened. Then it started up but immediately switched off again. This kept happening repeatedly.

I haven't had a chance to find out what is wrong so I removed the battery and will try again tonight. I suppose the first thing to do is to try a different lens to the 50-200 SWD which is attached at the moment.

Has anybody heard of this problem or can suggest a solution?

Ron

Re: Problems switching on E-30

One of the things that sometimes can happen to my E30 (when I was regularly using it) is the incorrect selection of the Mode Dial can show when first switching on & it is because the contacts within that dial selector becomes a little tarnished & a rotation through all the modes is enough to clear the problem. I would try that & all moving switches, cleaning any contacts that are reachable such as the lens & battery contacts (including the battery) & maybe that will clear the problem.

Re: Problems switching on E-30

Could be the battery needs charging if its been sitting for over a month?

Re: Problems switching on E-30

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try turning the mode dial and the on/off switch vigorously a few times to clean the contacts. I did change the battery but that didn't make any difference. Hopefully it is not something serious as I don't want to spend any money on what is now an ageing camera.

Re: Problems switching on E-30

I have had another play with the camera and changing the lens doesn't make any difference. It seems to be something to do with the arrow pad/start switch, as when I use the menu it keeps switching off as I navigate through it. It looks as if it will have to go back to Olympus for repair. I can't afford that for a couple of months so I will carry on with my trusty E-510 in the meantime.

Sorry to hear that. Hope it can be fixed without too much cost.

Re: Problems switching on E-30

I sent an email to Olympus Customer Support on Saturday to see if they have any suggestions and received a reply today. They told me to reset the camera and check that the firmware is up to date. If that doesn't work the camera will have to go back to Olympus.

Unfortunately I can't do a reset or check the firmware as the camera keeps switching off. I will have to send it away some time.

Incidentally, the instructions for the reset are as follows:

1. open card cover, 2. press OK + MENU buttons, 3. hold OK + MENU buttons 5 sec, 4. press OK button, 5. switch off, 6. close card cover

I wasn't sure if you should switch on the camera and then open the card cover or open the cover and then switch the camera on but a bit of Googling revealed that the camera should be turned on first. I eventually managed to do a reset but it didn't make any difference.

Re: Problems switching on E-30

Just an update on this. I still haven't sent my E-30 off for repair as I haven't had the spare cash, due to most of my money being spent keeping my car on the road recently.

However, tonight I got so fed up with things expiring on me, such as the camera, my dvd player, AV receiver and cd player that I decided to take drastic measures with the camera.

It seemed to me that the problem was something to do with the switch and four-way controller. I wondered if there was something inside there either shorting it out or causing a bad contact. In a desperate 'make or break' act I decided to try to clean the contacts in there (assuming they exist!) I figured that I didn't really have much to lose as the camera was worthless in its present state.

I found up a bottle of stylus cleaner (remember that?) and worked some under the rotating switch. Well, to be honest, I flooded it! I mopped up the excess with a tissue and gave it a good blast with my Rocket Blower. Expecting the worst I switched it on but, to my amazement, rather than expiring in a puff of smoke, it appears to be working perfectly now!

Before, when I touched one of the arrow keys it would turn the camera off but now they work as intended. I would certainly not recommend that anybody else resorts to such desperate measures but, fingers crossed, it seems to have done the trick. Obviously I won't know for certain that all is well until I have used it for a few days in anger.

The only problem now is that, having done a total reset, I have got to find up my Wrotniak crib sheet and insert all my previous settings.

PS i have just tried it again and it is still working.

Re: Problems switching on E-30

That sounds good to know Ron. I hope you left it on its back on a paper towel over night to let the excess drain out.

Re: Problems switching on E-30

Just watch is does not get a need for stylus cleaner or you will be have to give it a little 'fix' .

Re: Problems switching on E-30

I tried a couple of test shots of a Woodpigeon in my garden this morning and everything appears to be working as it should. Hopefully, it will keep going for long enough to see what Olympus have got in the pipe line.

Thanks. They were taken with the 50-200 SWD and EC-14 teleconverter, my standard combination for 99% of the time.

Incidentally, the camera has been performing perfectly since my 'fix', much to my surprise.
