E30 auto problem

I've had an e30 since they very first came on the market. I have a bit of trouble with the built in flash - it seems to get out of synch with the curtain sometimes even though I follow the instructions in the manual. Resetting the camera does the trick and cures it, but its not exactly convenient. I get the problem with all lenses. Anyone else had it? The other problem - and this may be my fault through misunderstandings something - is that the camera always resets any settings I've changed on the auto menu. I mean s-af to c-af mf always resets. Is this normal?
Thanks for sharing any experiences
