It's nice when things work out....

I spend far too many Saturday afternoons photographing our local rugby heroes. At this time of year the light is always a pain. If it's cloudy, it's very dark - I have known it to need ISO3200 wide open at the start of a game and been tempted to give up at half-time. When it's sunny it is lovely when the sun is behind you. But our pitch runs east-west so for half of the game I am trying to shoot into it, which makes life really tricky.

But what about nice backlighting? Usually it doesn't work - maybe the sun is too low, or there is too much haze or something and it's all I can do to rescue a vaguely recognizable image. But for some reason last Saturday it all came together. I still had to spend 40 minutes squinting into the sun to see what was going on, and had to do a lot of kneading and stretching in Lightroom, but I was jolly pleased with some of the results.

Our fearless winger Ollie darts for a gap in the defence:

Fly-half Matt kicks upfield - I wouldn't fancy trying to see that one come down out of the sun:

Chip through from Dave the scrum-half:

Sometimes Ollie gets caught:

They all have EXIF data, all E-M1 Mk I with 40-150/2.8 and converter or 300/4, both lenses wide open.

It was made all the sweeter by the fact that we won against Camborne, a great club with a very proud tradition from Cornwall where rugby is the national sport.

Hi BJ - Oh so lucky to be there with that light. Great pics showing how people really but their all into a game.

Thank you folks. Normally the job is to get a record of the action - but when the light co-operates to give such pleasing images it is a real (and rare!) bonus.

With the two big lads homing in to him in the first image, I expected the second image to just show a heap of mangled flesh, mixed with broken bones and shreds of green and white cloth!

The next shot was 1 second later and he got marmalised by three of Camborne's big boys! But we don't talk about that one.....

The back lighting has worked in your favour this time, John. Great action, great shots.

Belated thanks Mark and Dave. I am indeed pleased, it is nice to add visual appeal to recording the action. I might even try printing one or two of them to see if the golden backlighting works on paper.

I'm not going to tempt fate, John, specially not with an important game this afternoon. But he is young and pretty resilient!

Actually it is surprising how few serious injuries there are in rugby, given that they go at each other hammer and tongs and there are some pretty hefty blokes playing. I think once they get to a reasonable level of skill they learn how to take the knocks.

I certainly don't want to tempt fate!

Good luck for this afternoon and I hope it's not too cold on the touchline.

Re: It's nice when things work out....

Thanks John. I don't mind cold, it's not too hard to wrap up in lots of layers. I hate wet, which it is threatening to be, and it looks pretty gloomy as well so I don't expect any nice clear bright shots today.
