A great day birding Paul, its a wonder we all don't get shat on more often. Are those linnets on the fence? The tern photos are cracking, well caught....

The pink bird in numbers 5, 6 and 7 is a Linnet, the other bird in 5 and 6 I'm not 100% sure but I think is a tree sparrow.

Last one is a meadow pippet.

All taken in Seahouses Harbour at 9PM so the light was slowly failing...

Miserable thing wouldn't turn around and eventually went to sleep, and as it was past fish and chips O'clock SWMBO insisted we went for chips!

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

Some nice birds and shots there Walti. I assume the stroppy terns are Arctic Terns? Lovely portraits of the female Eider but I think the bird with the Linnet is a Reed Bunting, possibly a juvenile.

Hmmm... will have another closer look at the Sparrow/Bunting and try and work out which it is... the face markings are wrong for both, probably meaning it's a juvenile as you say! EDIT: Looking at the photo really closely, the grey beak rather than black beak confirms it's a Bunting!

Yes those are Artic Terns, there were also some Little Terns but we weren't able to get close enough to get a photo... Other than to see the yellow beak as a smudge on the photo!

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

This was as close as you could get to the Little Terns, there's only 33 breeding pairs so the RSPB are naturally very protective of them.

The have raised them up onto the boxes to lift them out of the very high tides that just reach them every so often...

Actually it's a Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus).

At Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk they have installed a floating raft for the Little Terns to nest on. It is covered with sand and shingle and has dummy Little Terns on board to encourage them to use it.

The birds in 5,6, and 7 are a Male linnet and a female Reed bunting.
The last one is a Meadow pipit

Sadly the Little Tern population has declined considerably or even become extinct in many European countries because of human destruction or claiming of suitable nesting grounds. I have a colony not so far from home, nesting this year on a gravel bar which under normal circumstances should be safe. However this late spring there was a high water surge as result of predominant northern winds and low air pressure and the whole bar was flooded.
