Who needs wifi

The E M-5 does not have Wifi So how to pull images off the camera to e-mail in the field ... Olympus cable to OTG connector
So now I can pull an image to my Nexus 7 and e-mail it
In fact it is quicker (and may use less battery) so I may as well do the same for the Em-1.
Now got to get it working on my Moto g but looks like it is one that requires a particular OTG cable.

Re: Who needs wifi

Hummm... that's really interesting and tbh, a lot less flaffy than wifi. Is it a simple olympus cable to OTG adapter?

Re: Who needs wifi

I had a Toshiba Flash Air Card. It worked very well, but a cable is quicker.

Re: Who needs wifi

Cable is quicker in various cameras I have EyeFi, Flashair and built in WiFi. I tend to use them for a quick preview on repeatable shots, landscapes mainly.

As most of my shots are of Wildlife it's less useful. Also I can take anything from 200-600 shots in a session. At an average of nearly 10Mb/JPEG that's a lot of the 16Gb capacity of my Nexus7 so loading them all is not really on.

I usually transfer photos from the SD/EyeFi/Flashair card to my standalone Hard drive via my laptop's card reader. It's so much easier.

Re: Who needs wifi

I bought a Transcend WiFi SD card a couple of months ago.

It didn't work as a wifi card in my E5. It also didn't work in a 'trail camera'. It worked OK in a Sony P&S camera, but the transfer rate was much slower than a cable. It also reduced the battery life significantly. It's now unused in a drawer!

Cables are much faster and really only a little less convenient than wifi.

Re: Who needs wifi

I didn't know this was possible previously. I'll upgrade from me Samsung S4 mini that has no OTG support to one that does. The Sony Z3 Compact seems a good alternative. You need to check OTG before you buy.

Re: Who needs wifi

I see there are OTG plugs now which would convert an Olympus Cable without having 2 connected cables. EG:

And USB memory sticks are coming with the adapter too:

Re: Who needs wifi

I've just recently got the EM5mkii with Wifi. And I'm impressed with the new possibilities. On holiday away from my PC I uploaded pictures to Flikr and Picasa every evening in the hotel. Gran gets to see her grand children every day. And no big mountain of work for me when I got home.

And yesterday I got a new phone with OTG. So even more possibilities.

Lightbulb Re: Who needs wifi

I'm ever hopeful that "connectivity" will become as easy as it was 10 years ago when Kodak brought out the Docking Station.

Just bring the camera in close proximity to a "smart" device and they link up without any actions and are ready to do whatever you want.

Near field systems are already in some cameras, so I dare say they will soon be introduced into the top end systems.

Re: Who needs wifi

Do you think that connecting to the EM5ii is a problem for typical users? The Wifi App is pretty slick. There may be room for improvement. Perhaps allowing 3rd party developers to create their own apps. Or include Raw transfer. But the connectivity part is more or less solved.
