E-1 firmware update with Win 7

Whilst on holiday last week in a wet Lossiemouth, we ventured out for a drive, totally random, and perchance ended up at the premises of Ffordes. Whilst SWMBO enjoyed the cafe and gift shop downstairs, I ventured upstairs to the camera shop, and wandered out happily some time later clutching a mint boxed E-1 body at a VERY good price.

The camera is working perfectly (also by chance I had taken along my regular 14-54 lens despite only going away with m4/3 kit), but has had so little use it is still on firmware 1.1. I naturally want to go to v1.5.

Now, I find that the latest Olympus updater won't recognize this camera. And Windows 7, with which I am blessed, won't recognize the version of Viewer which came with the camera. Is there a way round this without my having to create a PC with a lower OS?

Re: E-1 firmware update with Win 7

Stephen,
I downloaded Olympus Viewer 2 from the Olympus site and I'm running it on Win7 64bit - it's 53MB. I'm assuming it will support all E series cameras but the help isn't any - if you see what I mean.
Here's the link if you need it.

Re: E-1 firmware update with Win 7

Thanks - I should have said that I've also tried Viewer 2, with no success.

It seems the only program which works with the E-1 is Viewer 1, which I have, but it cannot be installed under Win7.

Re: E-1 firmware update with Win 7

I had the same problem. I downloaded the studio V1 and installed it on my Windows Home Server. This allowed the camera drivers to be installed and I could then update the camera to V1.5.

You need 2000,XP or 2003 32bit to update the camera. Vista, Windows 7, 2008 32/64 bit will not work.

Its a bit of a pain I know.

Re: E-1 firmware update with Win 7

Thanks John. I was afraid that would be the answer. I'll either build a PC with W2K - I've got all the bits - somewhere (a pain, as it's only for a one-off), or find someone still running W2K or XP.

BTW does Viewer 1 work for firmware updates or will I have to use Studio 1 (trial)? I have the master disk which came with the camera.

Re: E-1 firmware update with Win 7

I could not upgrade with viewer V1. I have to use studio. You may have better luck. I will have my Windows Home server (2003) running here if you really stuck.

Re: E-1 firmware update with Win 7

Thanks, it's not a big deal. I'm unsure if I would use any of the benefits of updating. At least the camera is at 1.1, which is the biggy.

Re: E-1 firmware update with Win 7

There are some very good reasons to upgrade

E-1 Firmware Ver1.5 has incorporated the following upgrade.

[Modification]
-
Improved the focusing accuracy when using the EC-20 Teleconverter.

* Upgrade history *

E-1 Firmware Ver1.4 has incorporated the following upgrade.

-
The S-AF speed in low luminance conditions has been improved.

-
AF accuracy under fluorescent lighting has been improved.

-
Images shot with the E-300 (TIFF, RAW, SHQ) can be displayed normally.

-
New high speed CompactFlash cards are supported.

E-1 Firmware Ver1.3 has incorporated the following upgrade.

-
A communication error rarely occurred when the lens opening value of E-1 was changed using the Camera Control Function of OLYMPUS Studio installed on a personal computer. This problem was solved.

E-1 Firmware Ver1.2 has incorporated the following upgrade.

-
It is now possible to shoot photos by fully pressing the shutter button repeatedly, while keeping the shutter button halfway depressed. This improvement allows you to continually shoot photos in C_AF mode, continuing C_AF with the shutter button halfway depressed.

- It is now possible to display the focus points for 3-point AF on Finder's LCD.

E-1 Firmware Ver1.1 has incorporated the following upgrade.

-
Allows higher sharpness setting values (+4, +5).

- Improves the exposure precision during macro shooting with flash in the P (Program) mode.

-
Reduces the time it takes for the camera to recover from the sleep mode.

-
"Erasing selected frames" has been updated to enable you to cancel several frames selected for erasure at the same time. This is effective when ERASE SETTING is set to NO.
After you select frames to erase, the SEL. IMAGE screen will appear if you press the arrow pad to go to the next screen or rotate the main dial to change the number of frames in the index. If you select RESET and press the OK button, all frames selected for erasure will be canceled at the same time.
You cannot go to the next screen or change the number of frames in the index unless you erase the pictures or cancel your selection.

Re: E-1 firmware update with Win 7

Sorted! Remembered I had a licenced copy of Studio 2, and my old Netbook had been Win XP before I Win 7'd it. So I did a restore, shoved on Studio 2, and Bob's your thingy.

I also have Studio 2 (v2.3) and installed it on Windows 7 64bit when I upgraded from XP before I learned that it is not compatible. So far it has not given any problem with raw conversion, editing or camera control (tethering) on E30 but I have not tried updating firmware.

Re: E-1 firmware update with Win 7

I only use Olympus software for firmware upgrades, although I do agree that it can give excellent results. I prefer to stick with just one conversion product - Lightroom - but unfortunately it doesn't do Firmware!

Must admit I never tried putting Studio on my main Win7 64bit machine. Maybe I should have!

Can I ask what you are liking best about the E-1??

I've never held or used one, but surely 5Mp, and small rear screen must be a slight turn off. What am I missing? (Don't make it too tempting though )

Re: E-1 firmware update with Win 7

Hmm... well, for a start, the 5Mp doesn't bother me 'cos I never print larger than A3+, which it manages perfectly well. As did my Canon 10D - similar pixel count. In fact, that was fine at A2 on the right paper, so the E-1 should easily match it. The pixel race is one which the tortoise often wins.

The small screen? Never look at it except for changing parameters.

The ergonomics are just about as good as a camera can get, on a par with the Panasonic G1/G2.

It's certainly no lightweight yet it feels better suited to its weight than the E-3 ever did.

The shutter sound is like an angels knickers dropping down - it brings a smile to ones face.

And I have to have something nostalgic, for old times sake, to take what's left of my 4/3 lens collection. I must get an adaptor for my OM lenses.

But for manual focussing, you really can't beat a good EVF, so that's a downside.

No you shouldn't have!!

Studio is incredibly slow on Win7, at least 10 times slower than on WinXP whereas Viewer shows little difference between Win7 and WinXP. Does not make a great deal of sense due to apparent similarity of the programs. Comparison done on two nominally identical laptops with one running Win7 Pro 64bit and the other running WinXP Pro x86.

Glad to hear you got your upgrade sorted. Have to say I have never heard the above saying before - it certainly made me laugh out loud
