Maybe the F-Plan diet is responsible.

Nice to see depth of field used creatively for a change. With so many mobile phone and compact camera images around nowadays one almost forgets what selective focusing looks like.

Good composition. Where can I find this should I feel the need?

Re: Lavatorium (or Rest Room if you wish)

Nicely composed use of differential focus.

Of course the term (from the Latin) was/is used for the communal washing area in medieval eclesiastical buildings. Later generations, having developed the habit of using euphemisms for anything slightly unpleasant have used it instead of latrine, water closet, dunny etc.etc. Now if you say you are "going to the bathroom" the last thing anyone thinks is that you are going for a bath.

Fountains Abbey, off the A61 near Harrogate. It's run by the NT and well worth a visit.

Indeed. With reference to another thread, would this photograph have been as effective or pleasing if the wrong point of focus was chosen, or it had been taken on a mobile phone or compact camera with almost infinite depth of field?

I would second that. Nearby Ripon is also an interesting place.

We have just paid our annual NT subs so we shall make a point of getting out and using our new NT cards.

Re: Lavatorium (or Rest Room if you wish)

It has a decidedly Roman name and appearance, doubtless makes use of the old Roman sewer beneath the city.

It is a stunning place, set in the beautiful landscaped gardens of Studley Royal! I visited it many years ago and always intended to go back. It has an interesting history as well.have

So long since I've been there that I had forgotten what it was like.

Run jointly by the NT and English Heritage so either membership card will get you in for free . Well worth a full day's visit especially if you wander around the gardens of Studley Royal as well.

As well as the differential focus I like the warm colours of this shot Steve, were you there around sunset or is it a sepia treatment?

Re: Lavatorium (or Rest Room if you wish)

IIRC the best way to view it is by approaching it from Studley Royal - the 'Surprise View'.
