My Surprise Pied Flycatcher

Sorry about the tongue twister thread title. After several days of bitterly cold northerly winds it swung round to the east today and diminished in strength, making it feel pleasantly warm. I decided to go to Lowestoft to see if any birds were on the move.

After about an hour I had seen nothing and was returning to the car when suddenly, out of nowhere, a stunning male Pied Flycatcher appeared right in front of me, perched on a post. My camera was still zipped up in its holster as I hadn't used it, so I had a few agonising seconds as I unzipped the bag and removed it, expecting the bird to fly away. Fortunately, it didn't, although it moved a bit further away, and I was able to take a few shots of it. The main problem was that I was so excited that I was shaking and couldn't hold the camera steady, which meant that they weren't as sharp as I would have liked.

I know that Pied Flycatchers are reasonably common in the western half of the county but in the east we only see them on passage and these are the first shots I have ever managed of one. It was a very special day for me.

E-M1, 50-200 SWD and EC-14.

Re: My Surprise Pied Flycatcher

We get them around here so I'm probably a bit blase about seeing them. There's a site I go to in Wales where you can sit and have at least half a dozen singing males within a 50 yard radius of you

Re: My Surprise Pied Flycatcher

They're nice looking birds. Not seen one myself so I'd be chuffed at catching such a shot.

Re: My Surprise Pied Flycatcher

I have now added an additional shot, where the bird had moved to a different location and was giving me the eye.

Many thanks for the comments and 'likes'.

Excellent shots Ron, never seen a pied, but get spotted nesting in the garden.
