Re: Another super wide telephoto lens from Panasonic

It has all the right ingredients to make it a stunning lens... bar one. Early indications put the launch price in Olympus territory (at least when the occassional discount or money back is on offer). Nothing wrong with that even for a variable aperture lens but it would be nice to have a choice of lenses at many price/performance bands rather than everyone competing for top slot.

Indeed. Technically speaking telephoto means that the back focus distance is less than the focal length. In this case it's the opposite - the back focus will exceed the focal length. It's an inverted telephoto, sometimes called retrofocus.

Depending on where the street price settles, I can see me buying one. I've been through the alternatives:

- The Olympus 9-18 is a nice small and compact lens, but I always found the corner sharpness lacking.

- The Panasonic 7-14 and Olympus 7-14 only accept filters using bulky and clumsy after market holders plus large square filters.

- The Panasonic 7-14 needs a rear UV filter to stop purple flare.

- The Olympus 7-14 is very big and heavy.

This one seems to fix all these issues. It's much smaller and lighter than the Oly 7-14, takes regular filters and first reports seem to show it's not got the flare issues of its older sibling. The variable aperture doesn't worry me at all. I'll likely only ever shoot it at f5.6 or f8 anyhow.
