Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

I voted stay but agree that if we value democracy then the process must happen, whatever the end result turns out to be like.
Be selective about democracy and there lies great risk. If it’s only 48/52 then it’s as much down to the remain side of things to have turned out on the day. I did.

Probably, becuse Farage said at the time that a 52/48 result in favour of Remain would be "unfinished business". Yet last night on "Newsnight" he was banging on about the "strong leave mandate" delivered by the referendum .

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

But that remark of course could apply to anything not just a re-vote, did he actually say that he would seek a re-vote? (not that i'm a Farage supporter mind), i'm talking about the situation now that is being proposed, it undermines democracy, would the same apply to the next general election? Well it's not what we the minority wanted so can we have another vote?

In a way, yes!

In a General Election we get the chance to have another vote in four years time. After Brexit we don't get a chance to vote again in four years time if we decide we don't like it after all!

Could this be the underlying problem with Brexit... with emphasis on the lying? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-pol...cottish-accent

As for the Welsh MP, if he too becomes confused, they had better hope he doesn't live in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch - which, translates into - Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the red cave.

Yes of course we can have another vote in 4 years time for our Government, but unfortunately we can't vote for the European Parliament that's where the problem lies...

Of course we can; we have European Parliament elections every five years. The fact that few people actually do vote says a lot about how well the EU communicates with the general populus, but charges that the EU is undemocratic are patently wrong.

Our Civil Service is responsible for implementing legislation and largely runs this country but we cannot vote for them. Their EU equivalent is the European Commission. However you could argue that because they are responsible for abiding by EU law over and above that of their home state they "rule" us to an extent and I wouldn't disagree with you, but if you're a member of a club you abide by their rules.

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia... Yes you can vote for your euro mp but here we have not had voting forms for a few years and do you know your euro MP? Also Mr Junker was not voted in by Joe public in an election so the system is at fault as the EU as we know it today will not be the same in few years time.

I actually wrote my euro MP about an issue a few years ago. Another EU country was violating an EU law. His answer was... I was voted down about this issue by most if not all the other country's and therefore cannot take it any further i"m afraid... So it does not do well for the EU and how it operates.

If you disagree with a Wikipedia entry, because you know better - edit it!

A professional librarian I knew said that Wikipedia was as reliable as any other encyclopedia.

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

Mmmm...much of the internet is flooded with items which are not true, you don't have to look far in recent news to see that.

Having had dealings with a researcher on a different topic he said the same regarding Wikipedia about mistakes etc...we need to step back and take a deep breath on the whole issue as we all have our views etc.

I think I'd believe more of what I read in Wikipedia than the Daily Fail etc! I certainly remember European elections conducted here and where I used to live in Hertfordshire but no, I cannot name my MEP .

From what I can see we have 78 MEP's, so only about 12% of the number of Westminster MP's. I haven't got a clue who our MEP is, which is just the point; I think they are so remote to most people that nobody thinks of contacting them.

I have just looked our MEP up and it seems that we have three representing the North East, Martin Callahan (Con), Stephen Hughes (Lab) and Fiona Hall (Lib Dem), but I still don't know which is our MEP.

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

An interesting observation, as I too, having tried, am still none-the-wiser?

Can't say I'm overly surprised at the lack of visibility. It does make one wonder how many, and raises the question on the credibility of interests of those who are a local MP / MEP, whose constituency voted out, voting against leaving the EU?

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

It would appear that several MEPs so called ‘represent’ you in the European Parliament, not difficult to find using postcode, saying that I’ve never heard of a single one of those listed for me (South West), slight lie, I’ve heard of one.
Is it any wonder people voted out if all these people we’ve never heard of are all getting their noses in the yet another gold plated, gravy train, political trough.

Well, someone voted them in to represent you!
