Cheap Defence trick
Hello folks.
I'm back after months of inactivity. I'm partly retired these days and I hope to click some more snaps this Autumn once the domestic dust has settled at Snaar towers. Meanwhile, while doing some UrbEx like you do, I discovered just how deep the Defence cuts have gone. ![]() Don't tell the enemy but many of our front line aeroplanes are not strictly this year's models: ![]() In fact between you and me, I'm not certain they were designed by engineers at all. While they are sturdy I have doubts about the power to weight ratio. ![]() Pete

Wait until you see the big elastic band they use to launch it.

Re: Cheap Defence trick
Well I suspect a carrier style steam catapult will be slightly more effective, but I suspect the range will still be very limited.
Interesting find, just hope the official secrets people wont be after you now! |

Re: Cheap Defence trick
They built mock up tanks during the war. Why not mock up aircraft. This could be the only one left.

Re: Cheap Defence trick
Don’t they try to use actual old aircraft for that?

Re: Cheap Defence trick
That's what I originally thought, but there's no evidence of fire on the structure or surroundings.

Re: Cheap Defence trick
I suspect it's been around long enough for the evidence of fire to fade.

Re: Cheap Defence trick
No, because they loose structural integrity in fire.
The Defence Fire Training and Development Centre at Manston has one with all the gas/fuel systems built in. It’s very impressive and made to be very realistic of the way fires burn in aircraft. I visited the school when I was manager of the MOD Fire & Rescue at Shoeburyness.

Re: Cheap Defence trick
Yes, it is what remains of the fire practice thingy at Greenham Common.

Re: Cheap Defence trick
It strikes me that it is an idea that never quite got off the ground.
